    What do you mean?

Mr. Illitch has the dough to pay big checks. He has just chosen not to open the checkbook. When the core of youth is there, I think the checkbook opens. It's still years away.

Illitch would just have to buy too many players right now...one or two high priced free agents wouldn't really help (see Gonzalez when he was in Detroit). He will pay for them, just needs to see more of a future. I agree though, it would have been good for Young to move to another team, he's a legit talent being wasted here right now

      Re: Tigers future?

This is from a guy who isn't in the Detroit sports scene but the sense I get from Mike Illich is that he cares more about his hockey team then the Tigers. I notice that he's willing to spend tons of money for the Wings and hire top notch smart hockey guys while the baseball club is run by a has been wunderkind and a great player who doesn't deserve to be managing such a miserable squad.

I will say this tho: if they groom the pitchers the right way they'll have a scary rotation in the next few years.

                        Re: Tigers future?

I don't think many high profile free agents are going to want to play for Detroit, no matter how much money they offer them.

They do have a lot of young prospects, but the problem is, they are all playing for the big club instead of developing in the minors where they should be. They all share the same quality right now too : they can't hit, and they have no control and grasp of the strike zone.

Look at Carlos Pena. He has all the natural talent in the world, but he hacks at everything. He is almost always overmatched at the plate.

Jeremy Bonderman really should not be in the major leagues right now. I totally feel like the Tigers rushed him in order to drum up a little fan excitement. Bad move. It may eventually pay off, as Bonderman is getting a ton of experience. It could also backfire, as there is a long track record of young pitchers flaming out because they were thrown into the fire too quickly. Keep in mind that the kid was a high school draftee, too. This wasn't Mark Prior, who was as major league ready as a College pitcher can be when he was drafted. I hope for Bonderman's sake that he handles his early failure well.

The Tigers have also made way too many costly mistakes in signing players that they vastly overrated or had ongoing injuries that put an end to their one time good production. They wasted a ton of money to keep Bobby Higginson and Tony Clark when they should have traded them for a boatload of prospects. They knew, or at least should have known, that they were not going to win anything anytime soon, so they should have unloaded them when they had the chance.

Of course it is easy to say that now, because both Higginson and Clark have proved they weren't worth even a fraction of what they got, but they did both have a few productive years. Still, I feel their talent and worth was grossly overestimated.

In Dean Palmer's case, he was among the game's best third basemen with the Royals, but he was always injury prone and has always been a strikeout waiting to happen. To me, that is more important than the amount of homers he would have provided.

The Tigers have long seemed to be enamored with the "boom or bust" type of hitter. In the early and mid 90's, they had a lineup full of guys who either hit a bomb or whiffed badly. Cecil Fielder, Mickey Tettleton and Rob Deer are just a few. That kind of lineup isn't going to make your team win more games than they lose.

The fact that Dmitri Young is their most productive player really says a lot about the team.

If, and this is a really big if, all their young hitters learn how to actually put the ball in play, learn to take a walk, someone develops into a hitter than can hit for both power and average, and their pitchers develop like their talent seems to indicate they can, they have potential.

They almost remind me of the A's in 98-99, where they had a nucleus of young players that all came up around the same time. Of course, the A's youngsters were much better prospects, but the similarities exist.

As long as the front office is patient with them, they should have an ok team in about 3 years.
