Re: May 31st - June 6th MLB Discussion (week 9)
The magnitude comes from the fact it was the last out of a perfect game, which would have been the first in Tigers history and only 21st ever.
I have no problem calling that the worst call ever or somewhere in the top 2 due to situation it occurred in. We have never seen a umpire literally cost somebody a perfect game on the last out in any game ever.My Teams

The magnitude has nothing to do with whether it was a regular season game or not.

Re: May 31st - June 6th MLB Discussion (week 9)
A team wins the World Series every year. A guy pitches a perfect game once every five (this is an average, obviously - 3 in the last year are abnormal. 20 in 100 years is the ratio I am using).
A perfect game is something special - it is one team at their best for 27 straight outs. Galarragga will never throw another perfect game, whereas the Tigers will win the World Series again.Comment

Re: May 31st - June 6th MLB Discussion (week 9)
The Denkinger call had to have been the worst in baseball history (at least that we've seen, or is publicized, or whatever).....but at the end of the day, even then, there was game to be played.
The difference here is that it was the final out. They get that call right and it's DONE.Comment

That is why I said top 2 at least, along with the Denkinger call.
They both weren't even close plays at all. One happened in World Series the other happened on the final out of a perfect game. They both are pretty equal IMO, but in different ways. Obviously people can disagree with that, but that is how I look at it.My Teams

Re: May 31st - June 6th MLB Discussion (week 9)
No it wouldn't have. Jorge Orta actually led off the ninth inning.
Whitey Herzog called on rookie reliever Todd Worrell to pitch the ninth. The first batter, Jorge Orta, sent a routine bouncer to Jack Clark. He tossed to Worrell, who tagged the bag ahead of Orta, but umpire Don Denkinger called Orta safe. Every replay angle indicated that Orta was indeed out, and a lengthy argument ensued on the field. Despite multiple protests by Herzog, Worrell, Clark, and Herr, Denkinger would not reverse his initial call, and the runner remained at first.
Plus, it happened in game 6 anyway. The Cardinals still had game 7 to close it out.Comment

Wow, that is nuts. But then again, pretty much every AL East team this year is bound to have a stretch like that at some point.Comment
