Re: Albert Belle

oh, he was definitely one of the most feared sluggers in the AL during the early and mid 90's.
but the things against him are huge.
- he was a 'bad guy' during the time baseball was trying to recover from the strike
- then he got busted corking a bat
- then he couldn't play out his contract, not his fault but you know how people are.

granted he did partialy redeem himself by plowing into Fernando Vina.

Well if you're referring to his current contract with the O's... you really can't fault the guy, he's got degenerative arthritis in his hip, or is it his knee... can't remember. No way that was seen coming. At least not at the time of the signing anyway.

Being a bad guy, true, but look at Cobb, he was a flat-out prick from what I hear... always sliding into bases kleats-up for the sole purpose of sending the message to middle infielders saying, "Go ahead and tag me.... and you'll be eating steak tonight through a straw!" lol

The fact that Albert used a cork bat and he was bad "during" the period when baseball needed all the positive influence it could get, THOSE are going to hold him back if anything does.

Woot... post #1000...hehe

I think he belongs. From 1993 to 1996 (and 1998) he was one of the best there was. His career numbers are not great, but if not for injuries, I think he'd still be playing good ball right now. Because of his dominance, he should be in the Hall. Just for reference, here are his career seasonal averages:

.295 AVG, .933 OPS, 182 H, 41 2B, 40 HR, 130 RBI, 72 BB-101 SO, 103 R

Phenomenal numbers. While I'd agree that he's probably a borderline candidate, he should be enshrined in Cooperstown.

I may be wrong on this, but I believe Babe Ruth is the only other player ever to hit 50 HR's and 50 Doubles. Belle hit those 50 HR's when it was considered quite a feat to hit 50 HR's. He might have been a jackass, but he DEFINITELY was one of the most feared hitters in the game in his prime. Like him or not, he was a great player. HOF'er, I don't know... maybe if injuries hadn't limited his effectiveness and shortened his career.

if we're gonna put guys in for 2-3 great years we need to start considering Ron Kittle, Dickie Thon, & Ellis Valentine.

Seriously, there are too many guys like Dave Kingman that belong there before Belle.
Where have you gone Ron LeFlore?
