Had to happen. Nothing good was happening in that organization from a leadership perspective."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Not a moment too soon. Hinch never had a clue what he was doing. He was a farm director, not a manager. He constantly made puzzling decisions, and is borderline incapable of showing emotion. The team generally plays the same way. Gibson is animated and will be a good motivator, good move for at least the rest of the season. Not sure how much the GM was at fault, he can't do a lot of spending in FA, so it's all about developing the minor league system, which is several levels down from what it was 5 years ago, so I guess that's the reason for him.Comment

Damn there's gonna be a crapload of managerial vacancies this offseason.
Can't say I disagree with the move as the D-Backs weren't playing to their potential.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

If the players aren't listening, then things have to change. Hinch seems like a good guy and I'm sure he'll find a job another job in baseball, but I doubt he'll be a manager again anytime soon."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. Re: D'Backs fire A.J Hinch & Josh Byrnes
Hinch never should have had the job, D'backs ownership was not too thrilled with the idea of Hinch as manager but Josh Byrnes sold it and they let him give A.J. the job. The players were not responding to him and at many times he clearly looked like he had no idea what to do in certain situations. Byrnes knew this too, was very loyal to Hinch and ownership held him accountable since he wouldn't fire Hinch they fired them both. This is where all of the overblown statistical data and charts and sabremetrics and all the nonsense are starting to ruin the game. 10-15 years ago Hinch would have never in a million years been considered for a big league manager job without having a single day of coaching experience at any level. The new breed of GM fresh out of business school without having ever set foot on the diamond in highschool isn't helping matters either.
It will be interesting to see what direction the club gos in from here.
There is already buzz that the team is considering Kevin Towers to be the new GM.Comment

I wonder if that does happen, how much KT would pursue some of the relief pitching depth here in San Diego. If there's one guy that can fix that bullpen with solid arms out of nowhere, KT is that person (and might just be what the doctor ordered for AZ's bullpen woes).Comment

Towers would be a good fit if he's given some money to play with. I think he's a pretty good GM but some of what he's done has been undercut by ownership tightening the pursestrings at times during his SD tenure.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

However, that was only one year and to be honest, some moves didn't pan out.Comment

Sabermetric GMs aren't hiring just to hire. They have a system in place. It looks like Byrnes subscribed to the wrong one."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied.
