    Re: Brian Giles to Angels??

It seems that this deal would do what the Pirates were trying to do and thats to cut payroll. After that nice break down by griffey I see that the Pirates acually cut a nice chuck of payroll of Kendalls contract.

The thing that bothers me though is Giles for Erstad. Yes the Pirates do save some money but giving up Giles for Erstad, I dont want to see that happen.

As for Benson I didn't relieze that Sele was also in the last year of his contract. It seems to even out, but I still have faith in Benson. Someday he will turn it around, it wont be with the Pirates but someday he'll be good.

I heard yesterday that the Giants may get involved because Santiago and Jose Cruz jr. are free agents at the end of the year. The Giants almost had Giles this past offseason. The Giants have some young pitching they could part with and the two GM's already have a relationship.

I think they'll be a strong market for Giles. Attaching Kendall to the deal makes things a lot harder for Pittsburgh.

You being a Giants fan, do you think the Giants gave up too much for Ponson? Moss, Ainesworth, and Ryan Hanneman seems to be an awful lot for a free-agent to be.

The thing is that pitching really isn't the glaring problem for the Pirates. While it's true that you can never have enough pitching, the Pirates are desperately in need of position players.

Right now, the Angels idea is the one that makes the most sense to me -- you get bit of a downgrade in the outfield (but he's still a decent player), a serious upgrade at catcher, and you get a veteran presence in the rotation, which is always a good thing.

I think the trade for Ponson was a good one, because they're going for it all 'this' year. Also, there's no reason to think Ponson won't stay with the team if he fits.
The trade that's haunted them is the Ortiz for Moss deal, but this Ponson trade somewhat negates that (at the cost of Ainsworth and possibly having to face Ortiz in the post-season.)

While I wouldn't mind seeing a trade with the players you mentioned in the original post, there are two reasons why I don't think this will happen:

                              1. Look at all of the other trades the Pirates made. Littlefield is all about trading for prospects. He isn't going to trade Giles and get three guys around/over 30 in return. If he trades Giles, he will have to get a top prospect in return - which is why he was so serious with San Diego.

                              2. The other reason why the players you listed would probably not be attractive for the Pirates is because Littlefield seems to prefer signing older guys as free agents for a year - as opposed to going out and trading for such established players. While I could see him trying to sign someone like Sele for year, I don't see him trading for the guy.

This said - I could see the players you named (Giles, Kendall and Benson) for Erstad and a couple of top prospects. But - just like the Padres - why would the Angels want to trade two of their top prospects for castaways like Kendall and Benson?
