    Re: MAN! the Mariners....

I wonder if this is the beginning of a a big fade down the stretch, very similar to what happened with them last year.

There is a part of me that thinks their veterans will be enough to prevent them from collapsing, but also another part that tells me that their key players aren't getting any younger, and age could play a part if they fade away again.

They are going to have to squeeze every last drop out of their pitching if they want to be in it at the end. It should be a great final month of the season.

The biggest problem last year, was Ichiro couldn't hit. Ichiro is back to his old self. Also Freddy has pitched pretty decent lately. I think once they get back into Safeco they will turn it around. Olerud isn't hitting this year though so who knows. I think the bullpen is too good for this team to continue like this. Soriano is a stud, Benitez, Kazu, Shig, Rhodes. The A's losing Mulder doesn't hurt any.

The point is this is an old team. Old players get tired. Their lack of depth is an issue. Just adding a few quality players would have been a great jump-start, but instead Gillick came up with Rey Sanchez and Armando Benitez. They have the recources to improve their situation but just choose not to do it. They should be out of this thing by mid-september and hopefully the Mariner fans will show their outrage with the franchise. Shame on them.

They do have a favorable stretch coming up against Tampa Bay, Texas, Anaheim, and another team. they could start heating up during then.
