no, it's actually networks like ESPN's fault for oversimplifying it. July 31 is the non-waiver deadline, not the deadline.

After that date, however, it's MUCH harder to make deals, since every team in the league gets a chance to stop you before you do it. It's actually a neat risk-reward thing. Do I put a claim in and stop team a from getting a guy? If I do, I might end up stuck with him, like the yanks did with heredia.

Personally, I agree...to me, waivers is not much different than trading (other than there are more channels to clear).

So, instead of even announcing the trade deadline, they should just announce the absolute last date moves can be made between 2 teams...waivers or otherwise.

If you put in a claim, do you HAVE to take the guy?

What if lets say, the Cubs put in a request for Giles....would they have to take him? And would they have to give up anything for him?

No, there are three options if someone puts a waiver claim on a player.

                  1) The team can pull the guy back.

                  2) The team can give that player to that team who claimed him (but his new team has to pay him his whole salary).

                  3) The team can work a deal with the team that claimed him. (The Giles Trade for example).
