    Great players by position

I think we usually have threads like this in the off season so I thought I'd throw this out there. Pretty simple, list your top players by position.

    Here's mine:

    RF - Ruth
    CF - Mays
    LF - Bonds
    1B - Gehrig
    2B - Hornsby
    SS - Wagner
    3B - Schmidt
    C - Bench
SP - Pedro Martinez (toughest one for me to call)
    RP - Mo
    DH - Martinez

    What's yours?

    RF - Al Kaline
    CF - Willie Mays
    LF - Barry Bonds

I know plenty of great players and legends, but as IF's, I dont know the positions very well. I know Schmidt is the greatest 3rd basemen, and guys like Sandberg at 2nd. But I dont know enough about these guys positions.

Starting Pitching is tough. Obviously guys like Ryan, Koufax, etc. stand out. If I needed 1 guy to win me a game, I'd go with Pedro. In his prime, he had the ability to be just as dominant on any given night as anybody who ever pitched. His stuff was electric.

I reject your lists already...because they leave off the greatest hitting player of all time!
He hit .316 in his first full season and NEVER batted below that in 24 seasons of play and he's not in your OF and leading off?
Blasphemy(or hypocrisy if you give me some sort of moral reasoning....because I already see "the cheat" on both lists. )

I almost put Cobb in there, but imo Bonds was the better overall player. Cobb was just as bad if not worse than Bonds when it comes to morality, so I'm going strictly on their play. Another thing is I think of Cobb as more of a CF than LF.

Because Pete Rose is not as good as Williams, Mays, Ruth, Schmidt, Hornsby, and Gehrig.

Also, Rose played just about everywhere on the field at one time or another so it's hard to put him at any one position.

Good points, I just think Rose deserves to be on a list like that SOMEWHERE. The man was the prototypical top of the order hitter IMO. The only thing he lacked was speed on the basepaths.
