Which Player is Better?

Look at the 2 examples of hitters below and vote whom you feel is the better offensive player. Afterwards, please advise your reasoning as to why in a spoiler so to not influence votes when users come into the thread...I think the results will be interesting.

Player A:
.300 Batting average
.350 On-base Percentage
.400 Slugging


Player B:
.250 Batting average
.400 On-Base Percentage
.400 Slugging

I voted for player B.

Player B has a higher OBP and an overal higher OPS. My personal preference though is batting average over OBP. I see OBP mainly as a 1B initiative in that it's a guarenteed % of the player getting to 1B. In some cases, an out would be more productive in getting the player over to 3B or even home on a groundout.

It's not SABER ball but runs counts immensenly sometimes and how the lineup is constructed may call for it. If a player is on 2nd base w/1 out and the guy behind me is a huge DP candidate who is strugglin then it makes more sense to advance the runner rather than work the walk.

Call me crazy, but I think they are almost even. Batter A sounds like a player that would be used for sacrifices. I'm assuming there is a reason why he doesn't get on base much. Batter B has good eyes or gets hit a lot and walks more than he homers. Sounds like a trade off. In most scenarios, I would want A for a tag up or something of that liking. I hope that made sense, because I sat here like 30 mins trying to figure this out.

I'll take a guy with a .800 OPS over one with a .750 OPS any day of the week.

This is a no brainer for me...I'll take player B. Over the course of a full season he'll make about 40-45 fewer outs than player A.

Call me crazy, but I think they are almost even. Batter A sounds like a player that would be used for sacrifices. I'm assuming there is a reason why he doesn't get on base much. The Slugging % is what determines 2Bs/3Bs/HRs...batting average doesn't see what kind of hits, just the percentage that the player gets on base via a hit.

It's almost a wash for me as both players have basically the same production. It's true Player B will get on base more and is more patient at the plate in that regard but Player A may sacrifice some outs but still gets the job done to an extent. I don't think a difference of .50 in OBP is THAT huge of a deal. Looking at the numbers i'm guessing Player A hits more HRs than player B. If that's the case he's probably in the 3-6 spots in the lineup and thus probably have better RBI numbers than Player A.

A .050 difference in OBP is HUGE. It's the difference between a player like Ryan Howard or Jay Bruce this year and Jeff Franceour.

It would have made their values much closer, making the decision more difficult. As it is an .800 OPS is going to trump a .750 OPS eight days a week.
