Bonds hands down. Intenionally walked with the bases loaded and walked with a one run lead in the 9th a lot of times too. Even with that teams best closers on the mound.Comment

...because he had more hits.
Nevermind the nearly five full years that Williams missed due to military service.
Nevermind Rose's .303 lifetime average compared to Williams' .344 clip.
Who agrees that Pete Rose was a better hitter than Teddy Ballgame?
I work with a guy who is about 55, and we had this argument. He is a big Rose fan and claims that Rose was better. He bases it off the hit argument, but he ignores all the other numbers that Williams destroyed Pete in.

Even though the steroids made him a bad ***. It doesn't change the fact that managers were scared to pitch to Bonds. But back to to this thread. I have always felt the best pure hitter in the game ever was Ted.Comment

You work with morons. There's really no comparison, Williams destroys Rose. They're not even in the same universe at the plate. The only discussion to be had here is by how much Williams trumps him.

Re: Pete Rose was a better hitter than Ted Williams...
I can't wait to show him this thread.
He got heated too and basically told me I had no idea what I was talking about. He is definitely a Pete Rose homer. When I told him I'd make a thread here, he told me that everyone would say Williams was better but only because Rose is disliked by so many due to his betting on baseball. I told him that had nothing to do with most people's opinions.
I don't even see a comparison. When I think of the best hitters ever, Rose never even really enters my mind. He had longevity and was consistent, but Williams was on a different level.
Someone on another message board did a modest estimate on what Williams would have done if he didn't miss time due to the war.
.345 lifetime BA
.485 OBP
.637 SLG
3,465 hits
685 HR
683 2B
6,391 TB
2,410 RBI
2,395 runs
2,717 BB
From another board:
By my rough estimation, Ted Williams lost 677 games while serving his country. In those games, he lost 811 hits equaling 1,507 total bases. Included among the lost hits were 158 doubles, 23 triples and 164 homers. He also lost 571 RBIs, 597 runs and 696 walks.
By giving him credit for all that missed time, he shoots up to the very top of almost every all-time list that he isn't already at the top of.Comment

Re: Pete Rose was a better hitter than Ted Williams...
Sigh. I just had an argument on how the Tigers messed up by signing Victor Martinez instead of Manny.
They needed a left handed bat, Martinez can play a few positions, great leader, etc. Fits the Tigers need perfectly.
Manny doesn't. I said "Martinez is a perfect fit, it's not even close."
His response was "It's not a debate, because Manny is a first ballot HOF and Martinez isn't."
Like...Manny had a great year, put up monster numbers, but what he did 5-10-15 years ago doesn't make him any better right now. He's just a good hitter now. His past doesn't mean he's better than Martinez NOW.JayElectronicaBluElzhi2PacTheNotoriousB.I.G.ReksSc arfaceFashawnJeruThaDamajaComment
