Re: The deadline is Feb 19th...does a deal get done (Pujols and Cardinals)

I was watching to PTI yesterday and they both said the Cardinals have leverage because the BoSox and the Yankees already have 1B in long term deals.

I can't disagree more. This is Albert Pujols here. You find a space for that guy if he wants to play there. He's head and shoulders above Gonzalez and Teixera. Plus the AL has DH.

True. Plus the Cubs will have about $40M lopped off their payroll next year (Pena, Ramirez, Fukudome) plus a hole at 1B and a burning desire to stick it to the Cards.

Be that as it may, Pujols would instantly become my favorite Cub, replacing Kerry Wood and Tyler Colvin lol

Yeah... how great would it be to see Pujols playing in front of 800 fans in Florida.

Starting to seem like the Cardinals aren't getting any sort of discount.

Matt Holliday has indicated that he is willing to restructure his contract and take a pay cut in order to get Pujols re-signed.

Doubt the MLBPA will sign off on this.

The MLBPA has been a bit less hands on when it comes to contracts though. Just look at what happened with Cliff Lee. Back in the day when Donald Fehr was running the PA Lee would definitely be in Yankee pinstripes right now.

if he lengthens his contract or backloads it so that St.Louis has financial flexability for the next 2 or 3 years, I'm not sure the MLBPA will/can do anything.

Looks like this is getting interesting

personally I still think he signs with the cards. Like I have said before, for selfish reasons I hope he takes the cards to the cleaners; come on Albert don't let them low-ball you. But seriously, it will be interesting to see how this turns out.

It would suck tremendously if Pujols doesn't get resigned but there is no way the Cards should give him a 10 yr deal. He will probably put up the same .300/40/120 type numbers over the next 4 years but after that he's probably going to decline and by the last 4 years or so when he'll be 37-41 it's really going to be a bad bad deal. I wouldn't give him anything more than 8 yrs/216 that's 27 mill. per year and I think you'd get your money's worth for at least 5 years of that deal. If the 10 yrs/300 mill is true that is very unreasonable and I hope the Cardinals say no deal.

I don't believe MLB contracts can be renegotiated (ie, backloading it) once it's been signed.
