I went with Teixeira, and in my mind its not even close. Pujols is very good, as is Adrian. But I'm taking Marky T everyday of the week.

Re: Best defensive 1st baseman
Let's go back to when Omar Vizquel was in his prime. Did we have these advanced stats? I don't think so. Did that change the fact that we all knew Omar was a great fielder? No.
I'm all for advancing baseball but I don't think I could use a stat that I don't understand.
Anyway, I'll go with TeixeiraMLB: St. Louis Cardinals
NBA: New York Knicks
NFL: Houston Texans, St. Louis Rams
NCAA: Georgia Tech Yellow JacketsComment

Re: Best defensive 1st baseman
As Enigma said Gonzalez has been known for this glove but I haven't seen much of him outside of highlights and the best way to judge someone is by the full context of a game. The first game of the Jays/Sox series he didn't impress me much but he literally ROBBED Corey Patterson at least 3 times yesterday which impressed the hell out of me because they were all difficult plays.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Best defensive 1st baseman
I'm all for defensive statistics, but I don't trust them to evaluate first baseman. UZR has given Tex negative numbers the past few years and I just don't see how that's possible. I'll trust it for the other positions, but I can't trust it for 1B when it tells me that Ryan Howard is a better fielder than Teixeira in some years.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Re: Best defensive 1st baseman
Glad to see this thread is alive and the poll is varied.
I know Howard isn't that great on defense, but he has been getting slightly better with his glove. I just needed another name to throw in there.Comment

The "numbers" may not agree with me, but I'm still going with Tex.Comment

Re: Best defensive 1st baseman
Don't like stats, that's fine.
Tango's "fan scouting reports" give Pujols a very slight edge over Teixeira in the field. Those are real people, watching real players, giving real grades. None of that "made up **** you can't calculate."
Most of the names given in this thread rank right up at the top of those rankings as well, Barton, Votto, Gonzalez, etc.Last edited by snepp; 04-17-2011, 03:13 PM.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Like you, I'm also suspicious of defensive metrics at 1B since they fail to capture the most important function of that position (handling throws), but the larger point here is that there's nothing concrete (or even subjective) to suggest that Teixeira is far better than Pujols at fielding; the statistics actually say the exact opposite.
I'm willing to grant you the benefit of the doubt that Pujols likely isn't that much better at fielding than Teixeira, but I felt statistical context was needed.
I really don't like those defensive sabermetrics as there is really nothing definitive about them. A lot of you are going to bash me but I don't care. I know a lot of you on here don't like the " I watch him, I know he's good. " but really how else are you supposed to? Go completely off these stats that you don't even know how to calculate most of them? Come on.

I'm not trying to make the case that Pujols is a far better glove than Teixeira. I'm simply stating that at the very least, there's nothing to suggest that Teixeira is a far better defender than Pujols, even with the eye test.
And if you want clarification on defensive sabermetrics, head over to Fangraphs and check out their glossary.Last edited by Chip Douglass; 04-17-2011, 03:30 PM.I write things on the Internet.
