Reds' pitcher Mike Leake arrested for theft

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Mike Leake was booked into the Hamilton County Justice Center today, accused of theft.

Leake was booked into the jail at 2:32 p.m. by Cincinnati police.

Leake, of Ludlow, was arrested after Macy's department store loss prevention employees stopped the Reds pitcher today after they say he took $59.88 in property from the store.

Leake is accused of stealing six American Rag T-shirts from the story, removing the security tax and leaving the store without paying for them.

Police said the incident was caught on security cameras at the Downtown Macy's.

The theft is listed as a misdemeanor. Cincinnati police didn't immediately respond to e-mails asking for more information about Leake's arrest.

The theft charge carries a maximum jail term of 180 days.

According to records, Leake's salary is $425,000 for 2011.

The Reds have no comment at this time.

Leake, 23, was the Reds’ first-round draft pick in 2009, the eighth selection overall. He made his debut with the Reds last season, becoming just the 21st player since the draft was instituted in 1965 to make the majors without playing a single game in the minor leagues.

Leake went 8-4 with a 4.23 ERA last season. He’s 2-0 with a 5.40 ERA in three starts this season.

Not to mention, according to Cot's Contracts, he got a $2.27 MM signing bonus. I'm not sure how much was paid already, but if this is true this is just dumb by him.

When I first heard about this a few hours ago, I cracked up. Why would a guy making $425k a season need to steal $60 worth of t-shirts?

Yeah they don't raise 'em too bright in SoCal.

Unfortunately even though he is a ML Pitcher he is still a dumb kid in a lot of ways. I wonder if this is a case of "i'm a somebody, i don't need to pay for this".

Either way dumb move on Leake's part. Maybe he should learn how to use a washing machine so next time he can wash clothes instead of stealing them

This is literally messed up. Wish we knew what Leake's reasoning was behind this. It's embarrassing as a Reds fan. But alas, dude could have a mental problem. Hopefully it's not one of those "I can do what I want because I'm a pro athlete type of situations.

                        Seriously, $60 worth of shirts?
