Even there its stupid, its just tradition, no one accused Cubs fans of being smart

That said I would never throw any ball back, odds of catching a homerun ball are pretty slim, I would keep it if it was meaningless (still cool to me) or sell it if its a huge milestone that will fetch a nice sum of money.

I go to tons of games and have never even caught a foul ball, no way I'd throw a HR ball back!

      What do you do?
If everyone said "Jump off a Bridge! Jump off a Bridge!" would you do it?

I would keep it, ask to meet the player later, have him sign a few things for me, snap a photo or two, and hand him the ball.

I'd give a meaningless home run ball to the first child I saw.

        Same with a foul ball.

I'm not really a memorabilia guy.

For all you who think Cub fans and other fans throw back homerun balls, you're wrong.
What they do is throw back batting practice homerun balls and keep the regular homerun ball.
There might be a few who neglect this, but its their loss.

And no, I wouldn't because I'm not a freakin moron.

What? Is there a supply of batting practice balls just circulating around the outfield seats? I doubt it.

Anyways. I'm cashing in as much as I can. That baseball player is playing a kid's game for millions.

Huh? I'be been to Phillies batting practice like 5 or 6 times and NEVER have I seen a batting practice ball get thrown back.

I'd give it back to the person who hit it. It's their milestone and they deserve the ball. Probably just ask for an autographed baseball in return.

I can't believe this is actually a question. Who the hell would throw it back?

Even if it was from my most hated player of all-time I would keep it.

Sure this happens sometimes, but I'd say more times than not people throw the real deal back.

Not everyone who goes to the game takes a ball in with them to throw in the event they catch a homerun, and not everyone sitting out in the bleachers catches a homerun during BP to throw back when they later catch one during the real game.

I can clearly picture this happening.

As for the OP's question I would keep it and sell it back to the player or the highest bidder.

Well I'd catch the ball, finish watching the game and then it would go in the same room with my, around 100, autographed baseballs, 15 or so game used balls, and 4 game used bats. Most likely right between my Albert Pujols and Junior Griffey autographs.

I would give it to the player. The experience of meeting the player, and getting something from him, would be much cooler than just tossing a ball on a mantle or something. But that's just me.

It wouldn't be on a mantle for me. When life gives you a winning lottery ticket, you take it.

That ball might pay for my son's college.

I'd throw back a decoy ball from batting practice. That's what everyone does. Of course, you have to authenticate the ball before you can sell it. (As a sidenote, milestone HRs have been thrown back before, including the first HR in Marlins history. BRING A DECOY BALL, GUYS.)
