Just discovered that that was Liriano's first complete game of his career!

      Crazy, huh?

His longest outing prior to that was 8 2/3 with the same number of pitches he had in the no-hitter (123), which is his career high. I wish I could apply myself to other things like I do sports stats because I just rattled that off the top of my head.

I watched Edwin Jackson's last year and that was painful. When I was a kid, Andy Hawkins was pitching for the Yankees and actually lost the game, while pitching a no-no. I'm not sure it was counted though, but it was still 0 hits allowed in a 9 inning game. Also I think he was beaten in a rain shortened no-hitter his very next start. So no, Liriano's wasn't the worst I've seen.

          Are no-hitters really painful?

At the end of the day, the pitcher who did it put up goose eggs and lowered every player's average. Not one opposing player came away unscathed.

I understand that it wasn't pretty, but to call any kind of no hitter "worst" or "bad" is pretty comical.

Dude didn't allow a hit... Anyway you slice it, that's impressive.

It just depends on what you consider impressive. I don't know if I would consider a perfect game superlatively impressive if every ball was a rocket hit at a player that they had to dive for or they were all fly balls to the warning track. I like the ones with Roy Halladay when he gets ground balls and strikeouts, really bearing down on the hitters to the point of the only hits that will probably come of the outing are duck-snort flair bloopers into the outfield, or infield squibbers that the corners can't get a handle on. I would consider that more impressive than a no-hitter with rocket shots and walks left and right.

Sometimes getting a hit is lucky, sometimes it is skill. Sometimes you can skillfully hit into an out as well. That's why I never liked when pitchers were pulled out of games because they gave up too many runs but they were all on jam-jobs and seeing-eye singles, whereas another pitcher who is fortunate to have the opposing players' liners find gloves on the field get to stay in just because, statistically, they are performing better.

A no-hitter with a plentiful amount of walks (I'd say more than two or three) is impressive because they didn't allow a hit per twenty seven outs recorded. But there are more impressive outings in the season, ones which allowed one or multiple hits, than a no-hitter like that (especially if there weren't any walks given up, indicating they stayed around the batter's zone for the entire game while being just as impressive).
