Well they're almost the same age and Bautista has killed it the last two years while Pujols has slightly declined from his staggeringly-high standards. With one player trending upwards and the other tending downwards at the same age, it's hard to really tell at this point, but I might be inclined to go with Bautista.

I'm a homer, but I'd go with Bautista too.

I think it's funny the guys in this thread calling for Pujol's imminent demise are Red's fans. The guy has a .255 BABIP so far this year when his career average is .313. His walk/K rate is fine. I'm going to predict Albert finishes with a .300/400/550, 35+ HR's, 120+ RBI.

One data point* is sufficient to declare it a trend?

jose bautista is a great POWER hitter but he did hit only .260 last season and this year it is way to early to talk about batting averages. But trying to compare him to pujols is just dumb. Albert has done this for 10 years and now he is have a "bad" year but that bad year is just as good as a normal players good year. Everyone knows pujols is the best hitter in baseball Bautista is just the best home run hitter.

And it is a lot easy to hit in games with no pressure since the Blue Jays are not a dominating team they are never on ESPN or any big network and they are never in must win games.

Bautista also walks, a TON, he isn't "just a power hitter."

And JFC, that entire line about hitting in games with no pressure makes me want to vomit. That's ESPN grade garbage.

Yet they're not let's say Pittsburgh or Houston so I don't see the comparison that way. The Jays are a team that is trending upwards and Bautista has signed on to be a big part of that. There's no single season pressure right now really but there is a ton of pressure for some guys to live up to their billing (Aaron Hill, Adam Lind, Travis Snider to name just three) and a pressure to keep going on the upswing rather than being mired as some middle of the road team.

As for the ESPN/big network game stuff, well Toronto is basically treated as if it's Siberia in the baseball press so even when the club is doing particularly well they don't get much pub. The only way the Jays will ever be on ESPN or FOX is if they're a super dominant team and leading the AL East by a good margin.

Which, again, would be the worst year of his career and there's a very good chance that it will be much worse than the line Bautista posts. We're not predicting drastically different seasons for Pujols.

You're going to have to try a lot harder than that to prove that there's a "trend" of decline.

I am assuming that they were saying he was done after 2007 as well.

                          Okay, let's see here:

                          1) BA of .312 was the lowest of his career
                          2) OBP of .414 was his lowest in eight seasons
                          3) SLG of .596 was his lowest in three seasons
                          4) K% of 12.9% was his highest in nine seasons
                          5) BB% of 14.7% was his lowest in three seasons
                          6) WAR of 7.3 was his lowest in eight seasons

What's really concerning is what's happened to start this season. ZiPS right now has him batting .306/.407/.568 the rest of the season (slightly sub-Pujolsian), but even if he did that he would finish the year around .295/.389/.526, decidedly below his career levels.

                          How is that not decline?

2007 was a much better year than 2010 (at least if you count defense), and I doubt he followed it up with so poor an April in 2008. People get old.

No way 2007 was much better than 2010. Anyway, I am not denying Albert will decline at some point and we may be seeing that. I just haven't seen anything to indicate to me so far that he is in that decline.

                              Pujols in 2010 - 1.011 OPS and a 7.0 WAR

                              Bautista in 2010 - .995 OPS and a 5.7 WAR

Pujols is also undoubtedly the better defender.

Kinda hard to be a bad defender at 1B.
