Replay clearly shows the plate was wide open for an easy hook slide, cousins never even looked there he went out of his way to hit posey. I'm not saying it was dirty because the rules allow such hits but i agree that it should be changed in some way.

Home plate collisions dont happen that often. You know what does? Plays at 2nd to break up a double play but you dont see anyone crying over that. Its part of the game and the agent's #1 concern is keeping his cash cow as healthy as possible.
If I was Posey, I'd tell my agent to shut his mouthAaron

The runner doesn't have prepared angles in slow motion like we do. He's running full speed and will be scoring the run any way he sees fit because that's his job. This is sports. When you take the field, there is always the chance of an injury.
Methinks you (and others that I've seen call for a rule change) wouldn't have much of an opinion on this if there wasn't an injury to Posey involved. I can remember when Torii Hunter slammed into the White Sox catcher at the time a few years back. It was during a big late-season series and everyone was praising Torii for "sparking the Twins run to the playoffs." On the play, there was no chance he was going to be out. The throw IIRC was both offline slightly and late.
This is just another example of people reacting to the result of the play instead of taking a look at the play's place in the sport. It happens in hockey all the time.
Exactly. Where was all the commotion over Swisher injuring Nishioka? I hated that it happened and thought that maybe the slide was a bit questionable. But you know what? It comes with the territory.Last edited by ImTellinTim; 05-26-2011, 11:41 AM.Comment

They can also be knee to head.
See: Morneau, Justin.
I guess the point is if you don't want to get seriously injured, take up bowling. There isn't anything malicious about these plays in baseball. It's not like they're attacking each other with their helmets like the NFL.Last edited by ImTellinTim; 05-26-2011, 11:44 AM.Comment

Yes but he was the runner coming in. so that was his fault.
Regardless i just don't think a runner steamrolling a catcher adds anything to the game. The league is just now w/o one of it's rising young stars which is why we all really watch the game to start with. Rules are changed all the time and i'll bet if you ask the players themselves this is one they wouldn't mind seeing changed.Comment

I know that you wouldn't be saying any of this if you weren't a Giants fan. I understand that you're upset that he is injured.
Fact is, the MLB is fine and will not lose any viewers because Buster Posey happened to get injured in a home plate collision. And I would hope that they wouldn't change the rule because of a rare occurance.Comment

At FSU now so couldn't catch the game but just saw the highlights at lunch. It's the same thing as a normal football play or a play that just occurs in the MLB for years. It just happens that Posey got hurt which also while unfortunate apart of the game.
Cousins did everything that he can legally so in the game to scoreSaints, LSU, Seminoles, Pelicans, Marlins, LightningComment

Regarding the Posey injury, I can't believe people are seriously advocating a rule change. Injuries happen. If you don't want to get hurt, don't block the plate. Pretty simple.
Royals are off to a solid 4-1 start today against the O's. They really need to get a win here to get back on track.Ryan Spencer

Cousins wasn't trying to hurt Posey. There was no way he knew he dropped the ball. It was a nasty hit but a clean play. It was unfortunate Posey's leg/ankle was in a horrible position. I just hope he actually heals from this injury, look at Kendry Morales.
Regardless, the Giants have a game in 2 hours. We need to avoid a sweep against another nasty Florida pitcher. Let's go.

Re: 5/23 - 5/29 Game Discussion Thread
A few years ago when the Braves were playing the Angels in interleague play Erstad took out our catcher (I think it was Estrada) and there were no calls for rule changes. 20 years ago our catcher Greg Olsen essentially had his career ended when he broke his ankle in a collision at homeplate...again, no calls for rule changes. The only reason this is being talked about is it's Buster Posey."People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do.
