Re: Dodgers file for Bankruptcy
Which is why MLB is to blame for allowing him to buy the team in the first place. If he lied or misrepresented anything in the contract to buy the team, MLB would be going after him for it. MLB screwed up and didn't do their homework, now they have to deal with the fallout. MLB could buy the team from him, but they don't want to spend the money.Comment

So what exactly are you saying? That MLB should just let this guy ruin a historic franchise just because they approved the deal too hastily?
See, if everyone lived by your standards... That is, not trying to do right after making a mistake... The world would be in even worse shape than it is now.

There is a huge difference between MLB's mistake in approving the sale of the Dodgers to McCourt, and your alleged "criminal" actions by MLB in trying save the Dodgers from a reckless owner.

MLB is keeping the Dodgers from being able to operate. They are blocking a TV deal with the sole purpose of using that to keep the Dodgers from making payroll. You cannot fix a mistake that you made by doing another wrong. Sure MLB screwed up and it sucks for Dodgers fans, but MLB shouldn't be keeping the Dodgers from getting revenue so that MLB can force an ownership change.Comment

According to the settlement terms, Frank McCourt would have received $385 million up front. About $150 million of that money would have been used to pay legal fees and other debts.Aaron

Re: Dodgers file for Bankruptcy
McCourt was willing to take pennies on the dollar for this TV deal, just so he can get more cash up front to pay off his personal debts, including lawyer fees. The Dodgers should be able to leverage one of the richest TV deals in the league, if not even starting their own network. Why would MLB let him mortgage the future of that franchise for his own short term gain when there is just no way he has the money to operate that franchise into the future?
It's game over for him but he just doesn't want to come to grips with it. He's built his fortune on a house of cards that came crumbling down and now he's selling off all his leverage to save his bacon for the short term. There's no way he has the finances to operate this franchise in the long term, especially once the missus takes her share of his money. MLB is doing the right thing by protecting the Dodgers.Comment

Re: Dodgers file for Bankruptcy
This whole situation is messed up! McCourt is scum, plain and simple. But, my question is, would this be as big deal if it were a team like the Seattle Mariners or Florida Marlins? People keep throwing out the "prestigious" and "proud" franchise card. Maybe it has muddled some of our feelings toward the situation.
I, for one, would like to see him gone and Mark Cuban get the team. It'd be pretty cool to see where he would take them...Comment

Re: Dodgers file for Bankruptcy
If this were the Marlins or another small market, small attendance club we would be hearing things like "relocation" and "contraction" if it came down to the league having to step in and take controll (see the Montreal Expos for how bad that can be in a small market). The fact that it is the Dodgers makes this a big deal, the fact that the owners have publicly flaunted their lavish lifestyle to the point that they used the team to finance it makes it a bigger deal.
These are bad people. I have never heard anyone say one nice thing about the McCourts.
I do know that basically the entire events department quit after the McCourts first season because they could not stand working for them.
All i can say is i'm glad MLB did not allow them to buy the Red Sox when they tried years ago, because as bad as things are in LA imagine how ugly this would be if it were Boston.Comment
