That's so sad. Took his kid to the game just to relax and have a good time. Thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and Josh Hamilton. Damn...

RIP. This is just awful. I hope Josh is doing okay and I pray for his 4 year old son.

Father takes his little son to a ball game. His father has a chance to catch a ball from what is most likely the boys favorite Ranger. Truly tragic what happened and my heart goes out to the child who had to witness this.

Its shocking a night out at the ball park would end like this.

I think players should not throw the ball up there any more. Maybe they need to just throw it to the ground level.

That is what I was thinking; MLB would come out with strict new rules. But if it happened last year, at the same ballpark, they may just look the other way again.

Hope this isn't the begining of the end of Josh's career.

Josh has come such a long way to become sober and get his career back on track and him having to think about this every time he wakes up would tear him apart. Such a sad story.

You know, I was just talking about this with my buddy, and I hope it doesn't come to this.

This brings me back to the time when the minor league base coach was killed by the foul ball. Afterward, MLB base coaches have been required to wear helmets. Then Posey gets nailed by Cousins at the plate, something that was very fair and IMO was justified (big Giants fan here). Afterward, people begin screaming for a rule change. Now a fan falls and eventually passes after a ball is tossed into the stands. Uhp! New rule!

The fan didn't know how to hold onto the rail, that's his problem (make no mistake, I'm not downsizing his death... the way that he died is as saddening as they come). I bet there's a thousand times better chance a fan dies from a line drive foul ball than from falling by reaching over the railing, which has happened a couple of times now so it seems. What, should all of the fans be blocked off the field of play with a huge-*** net? Should we just get rid of fans?

As I said in the base coach incident thread (though not verbatim): just because a freak accident occurs does not mean there should be instituted changes; and furthermore, it shouldn't take a freak accident to note that a change should be made... one should have been made beforehand if it was deemed there is a possibility that a preventative act could have saved someone's life prior to it actually happening.

It disgusts me that, now, we should change the form of entertainment in going to the ballpark because this was a wrong place/wrong time/wrong person to throw the ball to occurrence. Make no changes, for the love of Mike.

EDIT: Yes, Josh Hamilton will be scarred and from now on never toss a ball in the first row up there... but this shouldn't be a rule for everybody. The one thing that will probably change is they will add a chain link fence across that opening. They have that at PETCO Park for the regular sized left field wall. That makes sense, and that should have been there in the first place, unless there was a functional reason for it to be open before.

I agree. It would be a bad decision to change anything.

Absolutely awful. I feel for the family but even more so for the little boy who saw his dad fall to his death.

Also: I know the announcers weren't aware of the severity of the situation live but it still pisses me off that they were chuckling.

And this quote literally chokes me up...

"They had him on a stretcher. He said, 'Please check on my son. My son was up there by himself.' The people who carried him out reassured him. 'Sir, we'll get your son, we'll make sure he's OK,'" Ziegler said. "He had his arms swinging. He talked and was conscious. We assumed he was OK. But when you find out he's not, it's just tough."
Even after he's been hurt, his first thought was his son. That's a fathers love for you. Unconditional and pure. Breaks my heart.

Color me different, but why would Hamilton feel responsible? Did he throw the ball to the fan? In no way will this jeopardize Hamilton's career.

Sad news. I think something has to be done at Rangers stadium to prevent this from happening again.
