Re: Grades on 2003 Chicago Cubs and possible FA moves

Interesting post, I agree with the poster that said the Cubs should try to get Shannon Stewart and move Alou to first. Stewart is perfect for the type of baseball that Dusty Baker employs in Chicago. He has power, speed and very good range in the outfield. (tho his arm is suspect)

As for Alex Gonzalez, he's never going to be a great offensive SS. Trust me i've seen him enough in Toronto. All he's good for is a hot streak or 2 where he hits lots of HRs and pretty good defense. The rest of his package is just attrocious as he isn't patient enough and has bad plate discipline which leads to strikeouts.

I think that the biggest area of concern for the Cubs is the bullpen. I also agree that Remlinger should stay but remember he's no spring chicken. Some of their bullpen guys just can't cut it in pressure situations so i'd look to get a middle reliever or 2 and try to land a Closer like Foulke.

I See Castillo going to the yankees, cubs could go after that player from over seas that plays the middle infield, Or they could go after Jimmy Rollins i think the phils are going to make a run at Tejeda this summer, I am not a cubs fan i am a phils fan i think Rollins sucks

The bullpen is the key. That will be overhauled. The only guys I expect back are Juan Cruz, Remlinger, Farnsworth, and Borowski.

We get a huge boost in having Corey Patterson back. He was the heart of this team in the 1st half of the season while Sosa was down.

I don't expect A-Gon back next year. Hendry seems to be in love with Tejada. I only see A-Gon back if the Tejada bidding gets out of control.

I expect Grudz back next year. He was mister dependable this year. If Corey was the heart then I would say Grudz was the lungs.

I have heard that Jim Hendry is looking into acquiring Richie Sexson of all people. With Karros gone, Sexson would fit right in with the Cubbies' swing and miss offense. I wouldn't be surprised to see Choi sent for him if these rumors are true.

Estes is definitely gone, but unsure if Hendry wants to acquire another lefty or finally give Juan Cruz the shot he deserves.

I'd love to keep Kenny Lofton, move Alou to first base, and then sign either Pyrsenski, Javy Lopez, or Tejada....and then help with the Bullpen.

I wouldn't have a problem at all with the Cubs picking up Tejada and Sexson. The more run producers they get in the lineup the more likely they are to make it back to the playoffs. I agree about Patteraon. He was huge for the Cubs when Sammy was hurt/suspended . Getting him back next year will definitely give them more pop in the lineup.
