Smart move on Bene's behalf. Oakland gives up a minor league 3B with a sub .300 OBP and get Chris Young in return, and the D-Backs are throwing in cash to help pay his salary.

Don't really know what Arizona was going for. Pennington isn't even a good throw-in player. If Bell converts back to his oldself then it's a win-win, but they're assuming all-risk with this trade.

        Re: Todays Transactions 2012

Chris Young was my second favourite DBack, so this one stings a little. In the two games I've actually attended in my brief vacations in Az, he's hit .250 with a HR, a 2B and 4 RBI (that second bit isn't necessary but I think it's a cool anecdote).

To think we gave up Drew, effectively for Pennington, it stings even more. I've never seen a shortstop play the position so easily as Drew.

And for Heath Bell. Well, I love Heath Bell. Am I willing to overlook one horrible year for an otherwise impressive body of work? I have to, to make any sense of this trade.

As for where he'll fit in to the 'pen, with Hernandez as set-up guy and JJ. Putz as closer, who knows. Towers just loves his bullpens.

Mariners release Kawasaki and buy out Olivo's contract... Pretty sure both were 100% guaranteed to happen, unfortunately that means no more of this:

Payroll dump, they bit off way more than they could chew when they made all their offseason signings before the 2012 season. They promised their fans a new start, new beginning, a new era in Marlins baseball and now a year later they are rebuilding already. Fancy new stadium will have many empty seats this season. I'm glad im not a baseball fan in Miami, I'm also glad they sent those players away from the already tough NL East. One less team the Braves will need to worry about!
