    Gary Carter dies at 57.

Gary Carter, the Hall of Fame catcher who helped the New York Mets win the 1986 World Series, died Thursday at age 57. He was diagnosed with four brain tumors last May.

This was very unfortunate. Gary meant so much to New York and Mets fans, what he brought to the sport was irreplaceable. He was truly one of the best, and one of the first NY sports figures that I can remember. (I was 8 when they won in 86, and went to my 1st ball game at Shea the next year)

I just lost my father to cancer 2 months ago so I'm aware of how tough his battle was. He had a ton of faith during life all the way thru until his passing. My heart goes out to his family during this.

The '81 Expos were my first (doomed) sports love. RIP Kid.

Wow... I was always a big fan of his growing up. This totally sucks.

                  RIP Kid.

This one really hurts. I went to school with his daughter, Kimmy, and got to meet Gary a couple of times. Such a great guy and his daughter was pure class.

I'm sure the last 18 months or so have been terribly hard on the family. I hope they can find some peace and I hope that Gary is resting comfortably. I'll miss that infectious smile.

RIP, Gary. You will be missed.

I remember about 5 years ago I went on a search and got his whole series of books about the HS catcher, because I want my son to read them one day.
