I would think the experience of catching or snagging a ball would trump throwing it back. I always though of it as a big deal so I'm not too crazy about the trend.

I would give the ball to a kid who didn't care who hit it and was just happy to have one in both instances.Member: OS Uni Snob Association | Twitter: @MyNameIsJesseG | #WT4M | #WatchTheWorldBurn

Back in the day when the Padres played at Qualcomm stadium I threw a home run ball that Mike Piazza hit back on to the field. Then security kindly asked me to leave the stadium for throwing an object back on the field.Comment

Re: THROW IT BACK! THROW IT BACK!
Throw it back, duh.
Actually I was at Wrigley the other day, near the right field line/bleachers. Brewers hit a Homer, guy that caught it did not want to throw it back. Dudes next to him pressured him into he finally gave in.
I wouldn't throw it back on either accounts, and I think it's stupid that this idea of throwing back the ball is spreading. Heck, they started doing this at the Ballpark last year. Where does that ball go after it hits the field? The ball girl picks it up and throws it into the first or third base side with fans leaning in to get the ball. You might as well keep it, it's hard enough to snag a ball now-a-days.Comment

Re: THROW IT BACK! THROW IT BACK!
I've heard a lot of fans at Wrigley now bring an old baseball to the game with them, so they can throw that one back and keep the actual game ball.
I don't know if this is true or not, but there ya go.
I agree with some others, I would definitely give the ball to the nearest kid to where I'm sitting. I have enough baseballs (collected them through my playing days) and I have a couple of MLB balls from friends that have played, so unless it was a historic ball I don't need anymore.Comment

I wouldn't throw it back. I've gotten a Willie Bloomquist foul ball, and a Mark Texeira HR. As a M's fan, Bloomquist was one of my favorite players, I have it in a case in my room with his card with it. My Texeira ball is somewhere in my garage, lol.Seattle Mariners|Seattle Seahawks

Heck no! The chances of me catching a home run are not good. If it happened, there would be no way I'd just "throw it away"."The best thing about being a football player at Alabama...winning...winning." -Mark Barron

Re: THROW IT BACK! THROW IT BACK!
Ahh, I didn't know how they do it at Wrigley. When they were doing it at the Ballpark last year, the ballgirl would pick up the ball and turn toward the stands in foul territory, and a bunch of people would put their arms in the air hoping to get the ball. It was so stupid to see people throw the ball away in the outfield just so some bozo in the field level seats could have that ball back.Rangers - Cowboys - Aggies - Stars - Mavericks

Throw it back. I don't go to the ballpark for a ball anymore. I'm not 12. If there was a kid in the immediate vicinity, I'd give it to him. But I'm not going to hunt him / her out.
Why throw it back? You just do. And this whole "you don't throw objects on to the field" ish is laughable. It's the one thing you can get away with throwing out on the field!
Maybe it was the beer, but throwing a ball back when the Cubs were losing (against the Cards) felt great. I'll also never sit in another bleacher "seat," so I got my one. And calling it stupid is sorta stupid. I'm not sure if this is common practice at every park, but it is just part of the Cubs experience. You go to see Wrigley and watch the Cubs lose, and throwing an opposing teams ball back is just part of it. At least a divisional foe. Maybe it's the grown men pushing people over, "fighting" someone for a ball that has sort of devalued it for myself as a souvenir.

Wow, that's pretty sad when losing becomes part of a grand tradition. I guess I don't understand why grown men act like children when they go to a park and throw things onto the field.

Re: THROW IT BACK! THROW IT BACK!
Besides Wrigley Field, you will get thrown out of pretty much every other MLB ballpark for throwing a ball back onto the field of play, so yeah, not laughable at all.Comment

Saw this happen during the last Marlins/Nats game when LoMo crushed a HR to tie it up. Seems like a stupid idea, if I ever caught one no matter who hit I'd keep it or give it to some kid nearby.Saints, LSU, Seminoles, Pelicans, Marlins, LightningComment
