Yeah I'll either keep it for my kid or find one nearby if I personally don't want it. Its just stupid to throw it back on the field. But leave it to Cubs fans to make being a sore loser part of their tradition. ;-) lol

      Then again, maybe I do...
I don't see the act of throwing an opposing teams HR ball onto the field the same as throwing other junk out there. It's far from the same thing. And it hardly seems anymore "childish" when you see a grown man push a middle aged lady over to try and snag a "souvenir," or a rush of older folks fighting over a ball.

I've heard that this doesn't happen everywhere, and if you get thrown out in some parks for throwing the ball back then so be it.

Now, that said, I won't be that guy that yells at someone to throw it back. If dude wants to hold on to the ball then more power to him. If he wants to throw it back, I won't complain.

And obviously the comment about going to Wrigley to see the park and watch the Cubs lose was more tongue in cheek than not. I wouldn't go to games if I didn't think I might see the W fly. I find it funny that people are so seriously opposed to this. It's more out of "fun" than anything.

I have no problem with Cub fans throwing it at Wrigley, it's tradition.

I really have a problem when other fans mimic Cubs fans, especially my fellow "Cards" fans at Busch.

I say "Cards" because the ideal Cards fan would not throw the ball back. They ought to know better than that.

You have like a 1 in ___ thousand chance of getting a ball, why would you throw it back(unless you somehow have real good luck and get ones every single time you go to a game, and you go to games often).

The ball you throw back will just be given to someone else, so if you really don't want the ball, just give it to someone sitting near you who wants it.

If I can reach the catcher and it gets me looked at by the ball club, sure.

If not, well... ask yourself if you would throw back a foul ball, or a ball tossed into the stands by the opposing team. After all, they're all off their bats, right? Or is it only the ones where they score on?

In all honesty, it should be illegal to do. If you're caught doing it, you should be thrown out. You're risking causing harm to the outfielder whose back is turned toward the stands (and it's more than likely your hometown player as well).

Watch when that person is dying for the ball, and as you give it to him he throws it back.

Re: THROW IT BACK! THROW IT BACK!

Hey, I don't know how it goes down everywhere else - and the few stadiums I've been to I can't recall if it happened then - but it was just something I grew up seeing when we'd go to the games. It was just part of it. Opposing team puts one in the bleachers and you threw it back. It wasn't meant as some seriously crude or obscene gesture, like throwing an object at a player or something of the sort. I don't condone crazy behavior at the parks. My comments about the "beer in me" was something like 3 or 4. I'm not one of these guys that wants to get faced and be completely obnoxious. Not my style.

And I've never seen someone throw the ball at a player ... that's YOUR player out there. And the ball is usually moved on without any time wasted, whereas you might have to stop play for a few minutes while people pick up trash or something of the sort.

I always saw it as some fun "tradition." That said, if they "outlawed" this at Wrigley, I wouldn't complain. And if you want to keep it, well, I won't heckle you about it either. I understand about people not getting out to many games, for whatever reasons, or about the odds of even getting a foul ball, so I'm cool with people wanting to keep a ball if it comes their way.

If I ever found myself in the bleachers again, same situation, it's going back. Unless, of course, they've requested that fans refrain from doing so. I'd respect that. Would hate to be kicked out a game as well.

              -edit-

The late-1970s comedy stage play, Bleacher Bums, was set in the right field bleachers at Wrigley. The video of the play was also set on a stage, with bleachers suggesting Wrigley's layout, rather than in the actual ballpark's bleachers. The tradition of throwing opposition home run balls back was explained by Dennis Franz's character: "If someone hands you some garbage, you have to throw it back at them!"
And saw a video that has someone almost hitting Tejada ... >_>

I've never seen a player hit, and don't recall getting the impression that someone was ever trying to. Then again, I wouldn't doubt it. That's not usually the intention. But the bleachers ... some fans ... *sigh*

If you're an out of shape drunk fan throwing eight deep rows from the bleachers and haven't played a game of toss-and-catch in two years, you are bound to give that left fielder a blindsided headshot. You just never know.

You're dead wrong, Blzer. I doubt that ball would even make it to the field.

I understand Cubs fans throwing it back because it is tradition at Wrigley. But when other fans throw it back, especially rivals of the Cubs I think it's lame.
