They have a new stadium built, they're promising us a .500 season and that we'll never be a celler-dweller in the NL Central again, and yet they're saying that they will be cutting their payroll down to $30 million.
$30 million?! How can they expect people around here to actually support them? They were supposed to generate so much more money that was going to allow us to get better players by building the stadium. And with the revenue sharing, you'd think they'd at least be able to stay on the same level as last year, if not raise the payroll.
Yet they're going to drop it over $10 million?!
And what gets me even more is this. I realize that Sexson probably won't be a Brewer after this year. So with our payroll being cut and all, it's easy to say that it's best we get something for Sexson for the future. What do I just hear on the news? The Brewers are shopping Sexson to the D-Backs...for DANNY BAUTISTA AND JUNIOR SPIVEY!
Danny Bautista is 31 years old, is a career .268 hitter, has never had more than 350 ABs, is this how we're building towards the future?! And while I think Spivey shows some promise, he's only really had one good year out of his three years in the majors(yeah, i know he had injury problems this year). I've really seen nothing out of his that says he's going to be our future.
I just don't understand the Brewers. They say they're building for 2005 to be our year, so why wouldn't they be trading their star player for some prospects that'll come up in 2005? And how can they guarantee us .500, when instead of improving on a team that was decent, they're taking away pieces? Plus, it looks like our team president, Ulice Payne, is leaving after one year with the organization because of all the turmoil with management.
What I really hate about it is that Yost is gonna be the one that looks bad for all of this. I think he's a great manager, but you can only do so much without talent.
It's gonna be a long season Brewers fans(yeah, the three of us left). Payne gone, Sexson gone, Jenkins will probably be gone by the All-Star Break...at least we'll still have Podsednik...until he realizes he's worth more than the Brewers can pay as well.
