    Re: Trade Deadline Thread

Nice to see Dempster go to the Rangers rather than the hated Yankees.

BTW on the whole fan thing, I think the Jays are at a cross roads. They need to make a big splash in free agency/trades this coming offseason or there's going to be a ton of disgruntled fans and it could very well be manifested in apparel sales and attendance.

That's neither here nor there, I just wanted to give an opinion. I like what AA is doing but I do think he's a bit over cautious when it comes to trying to get big names. I suspect this is residue from the mess that was the JP Ricciardi regime.

Very disappointed in the Padres lack of activity this trade deadline. Okay Byrnes, I'll give you the Carlos Quentin extension and the fact that you didn't need to trade Headley and good thing he didn't settle for less (i.e. Jake Arrieta + Nick Delmonico from Baltimore). However, Street/Gregerson should've probably been moved since there are a ton of quality arms ready to take over their roles.

Do you want to move Street and Gregerson for the sake of moving them? They weren't going to get better players in return for those two so, if you're not going to improve your team why bother?

It's nice to see the Padres not have a complete fire sale for once.

That's true, relief pitchers rarely net decent players and of course teams are going to be weary about Street's ability to stay healthy.

Better yet, I guess it's better that Josh Byrnes didn't do anything this trade deadline. He'd fine a way to mess things up.

Arrieta is a change of scenery away from becoming a very good starter and Delmonico has a lot of potential as well. That's a very fair offer...asking for Jonathan Schoop on top of that is not.

That's a fair offer, but at the same time you can look at it the other way. Arrieta is an average 26-year old starting pitcher who might be at best a number 3 on an average team and is two years away from being arbitration eligible, and Delmonico is a Class-A 1B/3B prospect, and while he has a high ceiling, many high ceiling players at the A-ball level go by the wayside and plus the positions he plays at are not positions of need for the Padres. However, I bet that a trade centered around Arrieta + prospects was Byrnes' doing. It'd have made more sense to start with Jonathan Schoop + player.

Yes the asking price for Headley is ridiculous and no team bit on it, but the Padres aren't in a situation where they need to get rid of him. I'm glad that Byrnes didn't deal a position player for starting pitcher/reliever again, but he still has the offseason to screw things up.

Exactly. It's the same with the Mariners. Everyone has these pre-conceived notions that if you are "rebuilding" you aren't allowed to have any decent players on the club. If the return isn't worth the value you feel you are giving up, why take a bad deal just to collect more fringe prospects?

                  Impossible to say.

If you asked me last year if the Cardinals dealing Rasmus who has a lot of upside for a package of Edwin Jackson, Marc Rzepczynski, Octavio Dotel, and Corey Patterson (only 1 of which was under contract beyond the remainder of the season) was a deal that I thought would put the Cardinals over the top I would have said hell no. So trading Rasmus for a bunch of rentals and scrabble did not really make me happy even though it was becoming clear that Rasmus was not going to work out in St. Louis with La Russa there. Turns out Dotel and Scrabble were both on fire all postseason helping our bullpen shut down 3 very potent offenses, Jackson gave us some solid starts and the Cardinals got a ring out of it.

There were some discussion about Heath Bell going to the Mets for Jason Bay. Glad they didn't do that trade, since Bell is under contract a year longer then Bay is so it would give them less financial flexibility going forward. Bay is going to be released before next season no doubt. I kept thinking that he would possibly turn it around, but he clearly doesn't have it anymore.

Should mention John Buck was in that deal as well, the Mets were looking for a backup catcher.

I feel bad for Bay, was a huge fan of him back when he was in Boston, having signed that huge contract of course and not living up to it, just thought he was never the same after that concussion he suffered last year. But speaking about bad contracts, coming from a Red Sox fan, it's nothing as bad as Crawford's.

MLBN is saying the Cliff Lee did not clear Waivers today. Joe Blanton also traded to the Dodgers.

And the Dodgers won the claim of Lee as well. Now only time will tell if a deal gets done.
