Could Derek Jeter get to 4,000 hits?

Derek Jeter throughout his career has been one of baseballs top players, he hit for a high average, stole bases, occasionally hit the ball out of the ballpark. Last year he reached 3000 hits. This year at 38 he is hitting .320 with 163 hits. He has averaged 207 hits a season in his career. Right now he is at 3,251 hits and counting. At this pace he would get there in 5 years. While I know that in 5 years things could change and he could sharply decline. But is 4000 possible?

Interesting note: I do believe that Jeter has more hits than Pete Rose had at the same age. I don't think Jeter gets there though...when he declines it's going to be fast.

I believe 2014 will be his last season. So, no.

I think this is the best answer. We've seen flashes of Jeter's inevitable decline and it's pretty steep. So no I don't think he'll get there besides I don't think the Yanks will offer him a contract past the current deal so he'll retire rather than finish his career with another team.

Oh goodness, if we thought two years ago was bad...

Could he get there if everything was equal? Sure. However he's not the shortstop he was ten years ago. His fielding is horrid, and I just don't see him making a switch to first or designated hitter. He'll rack them up, but time and position are going to be major factors in how this happens.

As a member of the Derek Jeter Can't Go Left Brigade, I've seen the defense argument for years and it hasn't changed a thing. The Yankees keep winning with him at the most pivotal position in baseball.

Anyway, I only say that because if he's still capable of hitting .300, scoring runs, stealing bases, being respected in the locker room, and being a marketable player, then I think Brian Cashman and Co. kno that there has to be a place for Jeter somewhere.

It's not like the SS position has anyone waiting in the wings to take it from Jeter. I honestly think that Jeter will be the starting shortstop of the New York Yankees until he is no longer capable of playing baseball at a high level.

The guy is the most productive shortstop in baseball right now. He will probably pass Willie Mays on the hit list this year to enter the top 10 all time and do it in style by hitting .320 or so.

Everyone loves these defensive metrics but it doesn't translate into win-losses for me out on the field from what I've seen. Sure, every once in a while there will be a ball hit just to the SS side of second base that I know most other shortstops would get to. But it doesn't happen nearly enough for me to want Jeter playing anywhere else but SS and batting leadoff. If defensive metrics were so important to winning then Rey Ordonez would be playing in his 17th season.

I think Jeter gets to 4K hits but those last 300 or so will be a struggle.

After this season, he will need what, 700 hits roughly?
38 years old, going to turn 39 next year in the last year of his contract, already has 5 Championship rings, has the career stats already, it wouldn't surprise me if he retired after next season. Or wait, its a player option for 2014. So maybe he plays 2 more years, but really he has nothing to prove/play for. He's done it all.

Even if he plays exceptionally well these next 2 years and gets 400 hits, he will still be 300 short and looking for a new contract, and probably won't be playing SS anymore.

After this season, he will be about 900 back.

That's assuming he continues playing at this level all year. Oh, yeah, and if he does, it will only be a top three hit season for him.

He's outperforming himself. So he would need to outperform himself for 3-4 more years when he's 40.

                              Not gonna happen.

Edit: Sorry, was talking about catching Rose. Blah.
