Right, if you're going to vote for him, you do it regardless of the triple crown. An extra home run or two doesn't change anything.

    Voters love a narrative though.

I think most people would vote Cabrera ANYWAYS but to say that the Triple Crown is a "nice feat" is grossly understating it. It hasn't been done since '67 and there's been guys who've been close but didn't get it so it's one of those nearly unfathomable achievements in this day and age.

Cabrera will get his votes regardless if he gets it or not. Not only is he having a tremendous season but he's the most valuable offensive weapon for the Tigers.

I didn't mean to be-little the Triple Crown, so using the term 'feat' probably isn't the right word. Yes, since Yaz's in 1967 no one has done it (no one in the NL since I think 1937), but my point is no voter should be thinking, "I'm voting for Trout, but man, if he hits another homer or two and wins the Triple Crown than my vote goes to Cabrera".

Cabrera has been lights out, especially down the stretch, but Trout's value is undeniable as well (Trout is putting Andruw Jones like numbers up in CF) and I would have no problem with either of them getting the award...I just don't want to see someone give it to Cabby solely based on the triple crown.

          This is based upon what?

The majority of the Cabrera-for-MVP support I've read has been driven predominantly by the "triple crown" talk.

Well if that's the case than that's pretty sad.

Trout is a slam dunk ROTY (he's eligible for that this year right?) His numbers have been amazing but when I look at someone who is VALUABLE to his team I think Cabrera slightly edges Trout out though that's not exactly quantifiable.

I do think the "Triple Crown" talk is warranted and even if he misses out on it by a couple HRs or whatnot he'll still get the award. i can't see denying someone the award because he missed out on the Triple Crown by a couple HRs or batting average points etc etc. That'd be the height of nitpicking and would make the BBWAA look foolish. (though they've done that to themselves on more than one occasion)

Heh, at the time of that posting, I wasn't aware that Cabrera was in Triple Crown contention. Throw in his monster September (373/.426/.797) vs. Trout's .720 OPS in September and I'm pretty sure Cabrera is in the lead right now.

Silly me for thinking that BBWAA voting tendencies were on the upswing. Haven't had too much to complain about since the Rollins debacle in 2007 (20-20-20-20!!!).

Well, I don't think it's as binary as "Wow, he finished 2 home runs short of the triple crown; I'm not going to vote for him." Sportswriters aren't that tedious. Cabrera being in Triple Crown territory in the first place and leading in 2 of the three categories (while being in 2nd in the category he isn't leading in) is what's driving the hype.

Nonetheless, if Cabrera were to win the MVP because he won the Triple Crown or came close to winning, it would be an awful result.

Surely, someone who hits, fields, and runs is more valuable than someone who merely hits.

              Right?

in hitting (and if you account for baserunning, they wash out offensively). And then there's the whole "Trout is an amazing defensive centerfielder and the best baserunner in the game" part.

I think Trout's slump and Cabrera's offensive onslaught here of late is going to be a factor in the MVP ballots.
For me, I'd be voting for Trout, but his downward trend in August and September is what the voters will probably remember. Lets just forget the Angels were a travesty when he got called up and was the key component in that offense to really get it going.

One thing I will hate is if Cabrera gets the MVP solely due to the Tigers making the playoffs and the Angels not.
