Believe it or not, I agree with you on a lot of things you say about the Yankees. I'm glad we have an owner who does what it takes to win, but I'm not sure this is the right way to do it. Yankees have always had a high payroll, but when they were winning championships, most of the money was spent on retaining players. I don't think it's a conicidence that we haven't won a championship since our first major free agent signing (Mussina). On paper, the Yankees are better than anyone, and this year in the playoffs should have rolled over everyone. But it's hard to do when you have a so many different free agents every year.

As opposed to winning 3 straight, and 4 out of 5.

With the Yankees, there are just much higher expectations. That's just the way it is.

            Re: Sheffield is a Yankee

Sheffield will be a good addition come postseason time. Does Bernie absolutly have to DH. Cont he play left? Was soriano that horrible that he has to be moved?

Vazquez is a must as we need young pitching for the future. Him, Contreras, and DePaula could be a nice future foundation.

Let Soriano stay at second, his feilding will get better. Bernies legs will last him in left (plus he has always had a mediocre throwing arm). We will stick with Boone at 3rd. I have been a big supporter for DHing Bernie but giambi's knee wont hold up, HE must DH. A first basemen has to be gotten through free agency. Has anyone heard anyting on Scott Spezio?

Back to pitching...Pettite will be given a fourth year if the threat of him leaving rises. Moose is set, Vazquez will be there, Contreras will be there, and Leiber or Kevin Brown will be number 5.
the bullpen should have some of the same guys fromlast year (White, Heredia...ect), the addition of Gordon is big, Depaula from minor league will be given a shot in the pen, Mo is a constant. I think they need to concentrate more on starting than releiving pitching. Come playoff time MO will take two innings every close game.

Yankees officials spent much of the early part of this week trying, behind the scenes, to convince people their three-year, $39 million contract with free-agent right fielder Gary Sheffield wasn't done yet. In some cases, they even succeeded.

But the edition of USA Today Sports Weekly that hit newsstands yesterday exposes that misinformation campaign.

The Yankees had been trying to put out the word that the deal wasn't yet done because they thought it would convince the Braves, for whom Sheffield played the past two years, not to offer him salary arbitration by Sunday's deadline.

If the Braves do offer him arbitration (and now it appears they will), the Yankees will have to surrender their first-round draft pick in order to sign him.

Sheffield was seen working out at the Yankees' minor-league complex in Tampa, Fla., yesterday. He'll probably have a physical there in the next few days.
