Shawn Chacon to be made Rockies Closer

The Colorado Rockies have said they will convert starter Shawn Chacon into a Closer, in what may or may not be a good move for the team,
Chacon, 28, has been a starting pitcher for his entire 3 year MLB career, was 11-8 and was an all star last season for the Rockies, but sufferd chest and elbow injury's last year,
the Rockies finished 74-88 last season and lost 40 games by 1 run, Jose Jimenez, a free agent, was the Closer last season, but ineffectiveness cost him the job late last season, Justin Speier and Brian Fuentes shared Closer duties with Jimenez, Speier was traded to Toronto over the weekend for starter Joe Kennedy,
the move also opens a spot in the rotaion, the Rockies have several pitchers trying for spots in the rotation including: Kennedy, Denny Neagle, Aaron Cook, Scott Elarton, Jason Young, Adam Bernero and Chin Hui Tsao,
Chacon becomes the latest in a trend to turn starters into Closers, hoping to match the success of John Smoltz Eric Gagne and Jason Isringhausen,
and hope he's not another Jose Jimenez.

Question... is it possible to have a closer worse than Jimenez? I think Chacon will do a better job, but it'll still be pretty bad considering he'll be playing in Coors Field.

I like Rotoworld's analysis of this the best:
"GM Dan O'Dowd and manager Clint Hurdle are just full of terrible ideas lately."
While I am sure he will be better than Jimenez, I think he would be of more worth to the team as a starter. But then again, I don't manage the Rox...

Yes, the Phillies had two closers worse than him last season.

Shawn played in Coors Field last year, and did pretty well, maybe he will be used to it.

Wow, what a terrible decision by the Rockies. Why in the world would they take out their young #1 starter with great potential and make him a closer? Makes absolutly no sense to me.

Why are they even thinking of converting him to a Closer? He is a great starting pitcher. There is still some free agent closers out there who are better then Jimenez. Mike DeJean would be a cheap choice. Probabily could sign him under $1.5 Million. There's also still guys like Mesa, Wendell, Alfonseca, Benitez, Urbina, and Franco. All of these guys might not be the best closers or the cheapest but they would be better than Jimenez. I think Chacon being converted is a horrible idea. He is far more valuable as a starting pitcher. But lets see how the change turns out.
