Re: If you were building a team...
For my hitter I'd have to go with Posey because there aren't many highly touted defensive catchers that call a great game and have the ability to hit out of the 3 hole. I thought long and hard about Trout but I just felt that a player of Posey's caliber behind the plate was a little more special than a 5 tool outfielder which are fairly common weather it be in true skill or their potential skill set.
Pitching wise, I'll have to take David Price. I don't know too many lefty starters that will run it up there in the mid-high 90s with plus-plus movement and that have excellent secondary pitches with plus control.
And besides, both are still extremely young and are in the perfect market for extensions.
I've heard that sound 3 times... once was Babe Ruth, the second was Josh Gibson, and the third was Bo Jackson- Buck O'Neil

Well Kemp is about as close as you can get, depending on what you think of his arm.JayElectronicaBluElzhi2PacTheNotoriousB.I.G.ReksSc arfaceFashawnJeruThaDamajaComment

Re: If you were building a team...
He's close, but he's no where near the defender...at best Kemp is an average CF'r. I would put him close to 5-tool, but definitely not in a Trout zip code."People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. Tulo? Would you put him in there? Braun? How proficient exactly do you have to be in each tool?Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Re: If you were building a team...
Braun has the power, average, speed, but his defense and arm are meh. I will state that the 5-tool thing can be overblown and there are a lot of great baseball players who were only great at 2 or 3. My point was that there aren't a bunch of guys running around who excel at ALL 5, and even then I'd say Trout is only average with the arm.
Off the top of my head, true 5-tool players in the history of baseball are guys like Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle in his prime/before injuries slowed him, Roberto Clemente, and a young Ken Griffey Jr. Even Bonds didn't excel in the arm category."People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. You could go with McCutchen. Speed, Power, Average, Glove, meh arm. Pretty close

Re: If you were building a team...
McCutchen rates out as an average defender but that's pretty open ended. Jackson is another person who's close but could take the next step this year. He has an average arm, but he looks to be at least a 20+ guy here pretty soon. .300 hitter, excellent defender, great speed, improving power.Last edited by CabreraMVP; 02-24-2013, 05:19 PM.JayElectronicaBluElzhi2PacTheNotoriousB.I.G.ReksSc arfaceFashawnJeruThaDamajaComment

Kershaw and Stanton.
I'd be a bit surprised if Trout hits anywhere near 310 this year... If he can constantly keep up his beating of expectations, then we can talk again.
I'd also think about Posey, because a 300/20 guy at catcher is a great asset to have.
Bk - on sabermetrics.... I think they are amazing, when used as an evaluation tool. To be used as an end-all be-all in a discussion is a joke to me, but when you combine a lot of the stats (not WAR and such, I'm talking about ct%, h%, xba and more skill based tools than a random number like WAR) they make for a very compelling case.badComment

Re: If you were building a team...
I'm not a fan of... I can't think of the word right now... but most combination stats (things like QBR, QB Rating, WAR and the like.)
I think sabermetrics for baseball is amazing and should be used for projecting, comparing and everything else it is used for - but not in the way people think. Like the whole argument last year for Trout being MVP because "he has a higher WAR." IMO that argument diminished everything he accomplished (and I was in the camp that he should have been MVP.)
Just not a stat I enjoy, it tries to do way too much. Combining offense, pitching, defense and speed into one number makes no sense at all. I think that's how I want to explain it. I love advanced/saber stats though, for the most part. Don't get me wrong. Each facet of the game should be treated individually though.Last edited by ubernoob; 03-20-2013, 10:31 PM.badComment
