#1 - All Star Baseball
I'll be honest and say, ASBArt and ASBMan's Q&A threads are what hooked me with this game. There were so many things that I didn't know existed in the All Star Baseball franchise until reading about it. If I had known about the attention to detail (such as 3d Bullpens), I would have picked up this baseball game last year. However, slowly I'm starting to unravel little flaws that will still exist in the 2005 edition (no lefty/righty attributes, pitchers staying in the crouch position, vaccuum fielding, etc.) so that's turning me off a little.
#2 - ESPN Baseball
I played World Series Baseball 2003 last year and although the game was fun, there were many "little" things that ticked me off as the season progressed. Eventually, the game became WAY too easy. The only thing that kept the game challenging was the Power-Pro Hitting mode. Although compared to other franchises, there hasn't been much information released about this game but I'm confident Visual Concepts will produce another solid game. The trick is, will ESPN Baseball stand out against the competition?
#3 - MLB 2005
This game SOUNDS very immersive and excellent. Although 989 Sports releases solid games, their games tend to fall short versus the competition every year. Who knows, maybe 2004 will be the year for MLB 2005 to finally shine. Too bad I don't have a Playstation 2 but if this game plays as good as it sounds, I'm definitely going to lay down some cash and get a PS2 along with MLB 2005.
#4 - MVP Baseball
From what I've read so far in the 1up and IGN interviews, this game sounds awesome. All of the off-field features seem nifty. Its true test will be how the game of baseball is actually played. This was an area where MVP sorely lacked last year. Granted, EASports barely had development time to make MVP last year so hopefully, things will be different this year. No XBox Live play really turns me off about this gamae, though.
#5 - Microsoft's Game...
No one knows much about the future of Inside Pitch and High Heat Baseball. Will Microsoft release another baseball game in the middle of the summer (like they did last year with IP2003)? Even if they do, my gut feeling says the game won't hold a candle against the stiff competition listed above. Will they even keep the franchise name "Inside Pitch" or will they switch names once (or if) they start tinkering with the High Heat code.
So in short:
1. All Star Baseball 2005
2. ESPN Baseball
3. MLB 2005
4. MVP Baseball 2004
5. Microsoft's Game
