I've heard the Marlins are interested in Maddux.

    From Sportsline.com today:

"The Miami Herald reported Marlins GM Larry Beinfest said the team had no intentions at present of signing a high-profile player to supplement the roster -- despite reports everyone from Vladimir Guerrero to Greg Maddux might be ripe for the picking. The Herald also said free-agent outfielder Raul Mondesi told a Puerto Rican newspaper he was close to a deal with the Marlins, but a league source said there was no truth to that statement. Earlier, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, citing industry sources, reported the Marlins were examining a number of options from Guerrero to Maddux to Jason Kendall."

Just read Gammons' article on ESPN.com and it said that the Orioles are in the running for Maddux. It would be interesting if Baltimore signed Maddux, Ponson, and maybe even Pudge. That would make things in the AL East look a lot more interesting. Too bad with all these possible additions the O's could still finish 4th in the division, most likely 3rd if these deals go through.

4th is much more realistic, Toronto should have a very good team, but i'm not sure they can climb ahead of the Red Sox and Yankees,
but if Baltimore does not land any pitching they may end up in last place, the Devil Rays have done a lot to improve them selves, they may actually climb out of the cellar this season,
the Orioles are doing what they have done in years past, sign a bunch of bats (Tejada,Lopez,Palmeiro,Rodriguez?) but not build up the pitching staff,
Maddux and Ponson would help, but they wont be enough to make a serious run.

If they did get Maddux and Ponson, I think that could be enough to move ahead of Toronto, but nowhere near the Red Sox and Yankees.

I think that's a misguided statement. Toronto is built with the whole team in mind. There are a couple superstars (Delgado and Halladay) but mostly that team operates on the principle of the sum is greater than the whole of it's parts. (er I think that's the quotation) Basically Toronto is built as a team with a lot of workmanlike guys who are good in the clubhouse and who can perform admirably.

The sulky guys who didn't really want to be in town were shipped out and replaced by guys who really want to be in Toronto and be a part of something good. I think that Tosca this year will finally have a clue on how to run a bullpen since the Jays 'pen will be significantly stronger this coming season so you won't see so many collapses at the end of games. The lineup has a bit more balance with the addition of Chris Gomez and the anticipated call up of phenom Alexis Rios. The Jays future is very bright and you have to remember that this was a team that was statistically one of the better offensive clubs in the AL. I think it's reasonable to expect a repeat performance. Eric Hinske's doubles last year will turn to HRs this year and so we will see about 40 bombs coming from him which is what was missing last year for him.

The starting rotation is much improved with a good mix of veteran and youngish arms so there isn't likely to be a rash of injuries from the rotation. (Hentgen is the wildcard in this) I think that this rotation will also be a lot more stable and provide a solid 7 innings per start which is what the Jays didn't get last year nearly enough.

In short the Jays will claim 3rd place and if things break right could jump up to 2nd in the division and challenge for a WildCard.

Change, from what I heard Greg Maddux - Cards, Padres.

Most likely the Cards but if the Padres do trade Kendall it might clear up money for them to sign Maddux, that is if him and his agent lower their asking price.

I was hoping the Cardinals could sign Maddux this off-season. But the money isn't there to sign him right now. Unless the Cardinals can find someway to dump some salary or they can find a way to get him cheap. He's most likely not coming. I would like to see Maddux end up in San Diego to finish up his career. If they do get the trade for Kendall done it's a more likely possibility he could end up playing for the Padres. Hopefully the Padres can contend better in the West this year with or without Maddux.
