Re: Pete Rose should not be reinstated

Well I think Pete Rose deserves the HOF I was looking at baseball records the other day and the man's hit record is so far out there that it will NEVER EVER be broken. At least not in my lifetime.

Erod we wouldn't be having this controversy if Bart Giamatti hadn't dropped dead. As there was a back room deal that Rose would serve a couple year bannishment and they would review the case on which point he would be reinstated.

I think that Rose will get reinstated due to moral relativism and he'll probably be able to manage too even tho I don't think he should be fully re-integrated in baseball again. We live in an age where we just love those who ask for forgiveness. Just look at Slick Willy Clinton and Jimmy Swaggert

Never saw Rose play or anything, but I agree that he should be in the HOF, because it is not for morality, it is for baseball, but he should not be reinstated.

Re: Pete Rose should not be reinstated

What happens besides an HOF induction if Rose is reinstated? What else does he "get"?

The main thing is, is him getting to the H.O.F. I wont be happy until that happens. If the betting is true (and I dont know that it is, he admitted it, but who knows if he's just trying to get the monkey off his back and get into the HOF, like Mike Wilbon said), then he shouldnt have anything to do w/ baseball.

He just needs the H.O.F. His on-field play merits it.

Re: Pete Rose should not be reinstated

There is no question he bet on baseball. I remember seeing a show about it with both MLB figures and Pete Rose and his lawyers who were saying he didn't. This was all during the time when Rose was saying that he bet but not on baseball. There was mountains of evidence that he bet on baseball and on his own team.

He's now trying to get reinstated because everyone has said that if Rose admits it he'll be in the Hall at least. It does seem very disengenious of him to go off asking for forgiveness 14 yrs later and getting all this publicity. He's banking on the sympathy factor. Rose wants a full reinstatement so he can manage again. I doubt he'll get the full reinstatement tho.

Pete Rose is going to admit that he bet on baseball and the Reds, and then he's going to be reinstated?

Isn't betting on baseball the reason he was banned? Why would you let him back for admitting it after lying for 14 years?

Should he be in the Hall of Fame for his playing days? Yes. Should he be reinstated? Absolutely not.

How many Reds game did he throw to win a bet? You mess with the fabric of the game, and you are out forever.

                        <hr /></blockquote><font class="post">

Oh Dear God. I'm actually going to agree with Erod.

Well, to a degree. I do not believe that he should be reinstated, nor do I believe that he should be elected to the Hall of Fame. His on-the-field accomplishments merit it, but his gambling may have overshadowed that. And to clarify that, I agree that this isn't about morality. It's not about whether what he did was morally right or wrong. It's about him breaking the [censored] rules. He knew what he was doing, and he did it anyway. The Hall of Fame is about more than just on-the-field accomplishments; it's also about contributing to the game and advancing baseball. If it was only about on-the-field accomplishments, there wouldn't be so many non-players in the Hall. Pete Rose has been a black eye for baseball, and should not be enshrined along with the people that have contributed so much to this sport.

Besides, even if he does become eligible, he has to get elected first. That doesn't look to be happening anytime soon.

Youre SOOO right! There is no halfway here. He should be banned in the same fashion others before him have been-- no exceptions.

Here is the problem with letting him in as a player but not as a manager. If you are going to have a rule as a deterrent for gambling then it must be applied across the board. If you let someone in for what they did as a player then it ceases to be a deterrent. No way, should he be let in. Why even have rules at all? How is it they can really draw the line with steroids, corked bats etc if they give ground with this. There is something sacrosanct about watching a game and knowing its authentic that supercedes any accomplishment by any one player. It truly is whats best for the game. This sort of thing is not always easy to see because we live in a world that too often puts the right of an individual over the rights of the whole. Part of its the media, and part of its the letigous society we live in. Every one who is arguing based on Roses accomplishment have been conditioned by this. Its easy to just look at stats and say its not fair that hes not in but its really far more complicated than that because of the underlying erosion of the fabric of the game which ero

                              d mentioned.

BTW-- If they let Rose in then Shoeless Joe Jackson's family should consider suing based on lost income etc.

Also, lets not forget the meathead collision with Fossey in a meaningless game that, it could be said, ended Fosseys potential hall of fame career. For that alone Pete Rose should be banned but there are no rules in existence for that so Ill defer to the gambling as a reason that he should be banned.
