Re: Pete Rose should not be reinstated

Fair enough. BTW, I agree with you that purity is thrown out the window and that is a grievence I had. When Selig chooses to expand the playoffs its creating a long term problem and a short term solution. By that I mean he wanted to spike the ratings for the playoffs but in effect what he has done is make the regular season less meaningful-- a long term problem. And we all know thats just the tip of the iceberg as you mentioned some instances. In $hitting on the purists they might be killing their fanbase or at the very least robbing Peter to pay Paul. The gambling is sacrosanct though.

Other sports may not have such a moral clause in the HOF and to some it may seem arbitrary but again the legitimacy of competition is sacrosanct and many other sports havent been rocked to the core as baseball was in 1920. The fact is that Football has dealt severely by banning a player for a year but the NFL as a league may not have been in as much trouble as baseball was in 1920 with teh blacksox. The point is that if the rules are known by the players then they have no complaint if they get banned.

Pete Rose is going to admit that he bet on baseball and the Reds, and then he's going to be reinstated?

Isn't betting on baseball the reason he was banned? Why would you let him back for admitting it after lying for 14 years?

Should he be in the Hall of Fame for his playing days? Yes. Should he be reinstated? Absolutely not.

How many Reds game did he throw to win a bet? You mess with the fabric of the game, and you are out forever.

I replied in depth in the other thread but for once I completely agree with you Erod. I hope he never gets re instated. He is a liar and everything he says now is questionable.

Re: Pete Rose should not be reinstated

The most dangerous thing that could happen to a league is the perception that the games are being manipulated for betting purposes.

If I thought for one minute that Bill Parcells and John Fox got together and said, "hey, let's both put a bunch of money on the Panthers, then call a game that will make us rich", I'd never flip on an NFL game again.

Baseball has to make the punishment so severe that the temptation to throw a game is as minimal as possible.

Re: Pete Rose should not be reinstated

I was listening to the radio this morning and they had a clip of Sparky Anderson and he said Rose should be in the HOF with provisions. He should only go to the hall if they can't produce evidence that he bet on baseball AS A PLAYER.

We all know the evidence comes from when he was a manager of the team but how bout earlier?

I think that might be the best thing to do. It wouldn't be a full reinstatement but rather give him the HOF induction and he could go to ballparks but never hold a position in the game again.

he should be allowed to be in the HOF, but to have him manage or coach.. ugh.. i can see it now.. "what are the ODDS that this hit & run works?", "should we GAMBLE on taking the starter out?".. just say no to full re-instatement.. allow him to be in the hall for what he did on the field- also if Rose is allowed in the HOF, ya gotta let Shoeless Joe in..

I doubt Rose will get anywhere near a dugout. The most he could probabily become is a hitting instuctor or something like that.
