Re: Mets enter the pursuit for Vlad

According to Mets GM Jim Duquette it's all but unlikely that the Mets will make any kind of offer to Guerero, he also said that if they were to make an offer it would be short term, some thing Guerrero is not likely to accept,
he did say that the mets are looking for a RF, but the market is getting thin, most of the Outfielders still available are at best back ups, the team may have to pursue an Outfielder thru trade,
the teams other interset is a 5th starter, a spot likely to be filled with a minor league invite to spring trianing,
the mets apparently do not have enough injury prone broken down players, the team will have scouts at a try out for Scott Erickson, Erickson has missed two of the last three seasons with arm injury's.

Man I sure hope he ends up with the dodgers.Other than LA and Baltimore there's not a lot of options for him.

The Mets need this guy...I know that they don't want to spend money right now, but lets face it. What player better than Vlad will come around in the next couple of years. Can the Mets get Pujols...No...Arod...No...Bonds...Old, and No...Helton...No. This is the best player that is free for a while. Spend money now and Get him. Back load the contract so the bulk of it is after Piazza's contract is gone. I don't care, just do it. We act like we are not a big market team...

God, I hope so, but I'm not holding my breath. Wilpon is going to preach "fiscal responsibility", and I guarantee that he'll say Vlad's back problems are the only thing keeping the Mets from making a big offer. To kowtow the local media, they'll then make a 1 year offer, just to say "hey, we tried". If they really want Vlad, they are going to have to go 5 years for mega bucks.

Only two teams are in the front of the race for Vlad, Baltimore and Los Angeles, and LA isn't willing to go over 4 years.

Florida, San Francisco, and New York are only in the race if the Vlad/Baltimore dealings blow up and they can get them for a short term deal.
