What is the most overrated record in major league baseball? I think its the 56 game hitting streak. Conversely, I think the slugging % is the most underrated stat. I think the 56 game hitting streak's significance has been manufactured due to the fact it was Joe DiMaggio who did it.

Hit by pitch in a single season, I believe it was done by an Expo and it lasted for a long time/still stands. Basically a guy who's good at making himself look like he was hit is going to get the benefit of the doubt. Heck most of the time it's basically scraping by the uniform!

If you want an over-rated prestigious record i'd have to say it's the single season HR record. It's lost its meaning with McGwire and Sosa breaking it in the same year then both men breaking the original record again the next year and now with the spectre of Steroids hanging over Bonds head, well we can't call it a pure record anymore. A shame really.

Strikeouts by a batter in a season. Bobby Bonds has the record with 189, but also hit .300 that season with 48 SBs, 200 hits, 26 HRs and 77 walks -- hardly a bad year.

Too that effect, strikeouts by a pitcher are overrated when compared to ERA and whip.
