Wow saying the 56 game hitting streak is overrated. That record is pretty much an untouchable. There really hasn't been a realistic threat to that record in years and it is overrated?

Re: What is the most overrated record in MLB?
Im not saying that its easy to do but its just not that important. For example, if you average 4 AB a game over 56 games you could conceivably hit in 56 games batting only .250. In that season, 1941, Joes average during the streak was barely what Ted Williams hit over an entire season. Truthfully, Joe DiMaggios most impressive record is having more home runs than strike outs. Thats far more impressive to me than the 56 games. I think the HR record is still impressive from the simple standpoint of the pressure one has to endure in achieving it. I remember McGwires proliferation of homeruns once he hit 50. I remember looking at the comparisons between Bonds and McGwire also in 2001 when Bonds had to close like McGwire had done in 2001. I didnt think he could do it and Bonds obviously surpassed it. Not only that Barry was doing it while getting almost nothing to hit. Yeah, the guys might have been on something but I still think it was impressive for the reasons I mentioned.Comment

Re: What is the most overrated record in MLB?
56 game hitting streak has got to be the hardest record to break in baseball. There's no doubt in my mind. Hitting in THAT MANY games consecutively? Thats having a hit in every game for 2 months? With the inconsistency in today's game, no one will come close for a while.Comment

Re: What is the most overrated record in MLB?
Hardest Career plateu to achieve will be the 300 win mark for pitchers. After Maddux gets his 300th there'll be no other pitchers that will achieve that mark. Glavine could get close but that's it.
The only way a starter will ever win 300 career games again is if they go back to a 4 man rotation and I don't see that happening anytime soon.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: What is the most overrated record in MLB?
Yeah and I dont see anyone coming close to Rickey Hendersons stolen base records anytime soon. I would really like to see baseball limit the amount of times a pitcher can throw to a base. Its gotten out of hand and the length of the games reflect this. In the absence of that however, I dont see anyone breaking Hendersons single season or career stolen base marks.Comment

Re: What is the most overrated record in MLB?
No disrespect to Cal Ripken Jr. (who was a very good player) but I think his consecutive games streak record is overrated. During the streak Cal did put up good numbers and in fact won an MVP and a World Series early in his career. But that was the O's only championship during the streak and they suffered through some tough years as well (including a 21 game losing streak to start one year). I have to think that if any of his managers during the tough times could have taken him out to shake up the lineup and give him a much needed break it at times could have helped the team. When Cal's name and the streak became mentioned in the same breath, it tied the hands of the Orioles managers and the streak became bigger than the team.Comment
