Re: What is the most overrated record in MLB?

No disrespect to Cal Ripken Jr. (who was a very good player) but I think his consecutive games streak record is overrated. During the streak Cal did put up good numbers and in fact won an MVP and a World Series early in his career. But that was the O's only championship during the streak and they suffered through some tough years as well (including a 21 game losing streak to start one year). I have to think that if any of his managers during the tough times could have taken him out to shake up the lineup and give him a much needed break it at times could have helped the team. When Cal's name and the streak became mentioned in the same breath, it tied the hands of the Orioles managers and the streak became bigger than the team.

I agree. I also, dont like how it ended. Its kind of a slap in the face of Loug Gehrig who gave the record its significance. It only ended for Gehrig because his body was being ravaged by a terminal illness while it ended for Cal when he just decided he didnt want to play one day. That on top of the fact that the record became bigger than the team.

Judging the 56 game hitting streak on how it looks on paper does no justice to just how difficult that record was to attain-- I agree that it's the most prestigious.

The consecutive games played record is too much about image and not reality, on both Gehrig and Ripken's part. Ruth used to complain that it would do the Yanks good if Gehrig would take a day off now and then. Both guys had the ability to play most every game, but everyone, and I mean everyone, no matter what line of work, benefits from a day off now and then.

Ripken's consecutive games streak and Hendersons stolen base record are records that will likely never be broken, i don't think the 56 game hitting streak is overrated, you can say that it's been hyped up over the years because it was Joe DiMaggio but that does not make it overrated, the closest anyone has come is 41 games, if we start seeing multiple players reaching 50+ game hitting streaks, then, it will be overrated.

The only way a starter will ever win 300 career games again is if they go back to a 4 man rotation and I don't see that happening anytime soon.

Can you honestly say the 56 game hitting streak is more difficult than hitting a HR in 8 consecutive games? Honestly, Orel Hershisers record of most consecutive scoreless innings might be just as impressive and just as difficult as the 56 game hitting streak but Im telling you that the 56 game hitting streak while difficult is not important.
