WFAN has a salary cap idea

this afternoon a caller named joey, who is from las vegas says he came up with an idea for a salary cap in his college economics class...he attends unlv...here is his idea

you set a salary cap of 50 million dollars for 20 players off of your 25 man roster...then for the other 5...these can be your star players where you can spend as much as you want on them...

so a team...lets say the yanks...wanted to sign everyone and their mother...they couldnt b/c...they would only be allowed to sign five top tier players(in their eyes)

lets take jeter arod giambi mussina vasquez...they can give these players as much as they want

but it leaves out sheff rivera matsui...etc

this would force teams to spend their cash wisely and force them to build around people instead of signing everyone

tell me ur feelings on this...how can you expand on it

That's actually a pretty darn good idea. My only question is this: How will this address incentive laden contracts. Let's say the Yanks want to keep Sheff, Rivera and Matsui well they can sign those guys to reasonable contracts but put in easily attainable incentive clauses (such as hitting .300, hitting 20 HRs, having 25+ saves) These guys will still probably go to the Yanks cuz the Yanks can put in those big bonuses.

Othat than that, it's the best idea i've heard in a long time.

Well, this is me coming to you straight from Dreamland, but I think the league should have a $75mil cap imposed on each team, and there should be blanket revenue-sharing, end of story. Personally, I'd rather see a salary cap imposed on a per-player basis, where no one player makes more than $5mil, and as a result, ticket and concession prices would come down commensurately.

I love to watch baseball because the game will always be the game. But the price to see a game live is friggin ridiculous, especially when you want to bring your family.

Plus, I'm mostly Socialist, so there's that...

Salary caps and cheaper tickets for all!

Then you should understand why Socialism and Communism failed...what would be the incentive to owning a large market team? If the Yankees are going to draw 3.5 million and the Brewer 1.1 million, why in the hell would I want to own the Yankees and have to pay all the extra employees it takes to run a large market team? Baseball just doesn't belong in certain 'big league' towns anymore, and I don't think the game can be fixed until people take a long look around and realize this.

True Socialism never failed because true Socialism was never attempted. But that's another argument for another forum.

This is a debate that's been going on for years and years.

All I can say is, a free market, as we all know, if left unchecked, makes the rich richer and the poor poorer, and present-day baseball is the perfect example. NYY is in it every year, because the more money they make, the more they spend. The more they spend, the more they make. Tampa will never be in it without an act of God. Freak occurances like Florida CAN happen, but they are far the exception, and not the rule. Bottom line is, the teams with the money have the better chance to win. Is this the natural result of the governance of the free-market? Sure. But then you have to ask yourself.

Like Socialism pertains to Earth: Which is more important, the individual nation, or the planet as a whole?

Like Socialism pertains to a nation, what is more important? The individual states within, or the nation as a whole?

And as it pertains to baseball: Which is more important, the individual team, the individual player, or the league as a whole?

I like parity. I like when every team has an equal chance to win. And I would like to see pro baseball take the steps necessary to make that happen.

canada is somewhat socialistic and its one of the greatest countries in the world. Higher than america in most if not all UN rankings.

Salary cap is neccessary in All sports. Big markets are doing just fine in nba and nfl.
