Unless there is something more recent than the espn.com article, that is if it requires surgery, which would mean it's more than just a jammed thumb. He also could be back in spring training.

I read the article on espn it even says its a jammed thumb nothing more. It also says its a old injury which could require surgery but, I mean its a jammed thumb thats all they are saying.

Thats dumb to miss 2-3 months with a jammed thumb. There has to be something else to just a jammed thumb like something wrong with the knuckle or joint?

"But after an MRI exam Sunday, the team decided Monday to send him to a hand expert in New York.

"Now, I'm officially worried about it," general manager Brian Cashman said.

Sheffield said he aggravated a thumb injury from last season.

Cashman said the worst-case scenario would be that Sheffield requires surgery, meaning he would be out two to three months. The best-case scenario, Cashman said, would be that Sheffield could return for spring training games."

Taking mri's, sending him to a hand expert in New York, possibly needing surgery. Sounds like more than a jammed thumb to me.

That just means they have a trade in the works for Vlad.
