Re: 2013-14 Hot Stove League Thread
Jays are in on Gordon Beckham and things sound like they're getting stupid.
One player whose name has already entered the conversation is Chicago White Sox second baseman Gordon Beckham. According to Scott Merkin of MLB.com, the Blue Jays explored a possible trade for Beckham last off-season and are still interested in making a deal.
The arbitration eligible Beckham won't be a free agent until 2016, which means that in order to acquire him, Toronto might have to give up a couple of prospects such as pitchers Aaron Sanchez, Marcus Stroman, John Stilson and Roberto Osuna, and/or catcher AJ Jimenez, in order to seal the deal. However, the White Sox would probably have to feel confident that Marcus Semien, who hit .261 in 69 September at-bats with the team, would be ready to step in at the position going forward in order to pull the trigger."Twelve at-bats is a pretty decent sample size." - Eric ByrnesComment

I can see giving up one of those prospects but two? Anthopoulos would have to be insane to do that.
Also on the Jays front, they wisely picked up the option on Casey Janssen's contract.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

I would say that one of those first three guys for Beckham would be a fire-able offense and one of the last two would be a poor/mediocre trade. I absolutely can't "see" it."Twelve at-bats is a pretty decent sample size." - Eric ByrnesComment

There has to be a ~1 WAR second baseman out there somewhere that can be had for nothing but cash. It would be lunacy to give up anything of meaningful value for Backham.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Absolutely. Kelly Johnson, Brian Roberts, Mark Ellis and Nick Punto can all be reasonably projected to have more value than Beckham and will cost nothing but marginal amounts of moolah (marginal moolah, I like that :3 ). I'm still riding the Kolten Wong bandwagon, but if we don't want to make a major acquisition there any of those guys except maybe Punto are likely better than Beckham for less.

Ellis had a pretty decent season over in LA, whoever is in need of a second baseman should probably look into him on the 1 year 3 million type of deal.Come hang with me on YouTube! I stream/make videos on a variety of games from sports, to action, to adventure!

I would readily give Ellis a 2/13 deal. He would be very nice."Twelve at-bats is a pretty decent sample size." - Eric ByrnesComment

Re: 2013-14 Hot Stove League Thread
Yup Wong is the future at 2B for the Cards, Carpenter will shift to 3B most likely and I think Freese's time is up.
Kozma can probably be had (I'm sure teams will be beating down the door for him) since hopefully we'll upgrade at SS and keep Descalso as our utility guy.Favorite Teams:

You can see giving up one of Aaron Sanchez, Roberto Osuna, Marcus Stroman, John Stilson or AJ Jimenez for Gordon Beckham?

On a good team, Beckham isn't worth more than a utility guy. If they want a starting 2B, they should trade for Brandon Philips.Comment

And let me be clear that Sanchez/whatever for Beckham + Danks has the potential to be even worse."Twelve at-bats is a pretty decent sample size." - Eric ByrnesComment
