Re: Cedeno traded

exactly....and should Cedeno prove to be equally as terrible and useless in St. Louis, it costs them virtually nothing to just release him, whereas it wouldve cost the Mets 10 mil....so good trade for both sides, i think

      Re: Cedeno traded

If anyone is really interested, here is an article on how Chris Widger feels about this blockbuster trade.

      "LaRussa didn't want me here"

MEMPHIS - Catcher Chris Widger's curious spring came to an unexpected conclusion Saturday when he was packaged with infielder Wilson Delgado in a trade for New York Mets outfielder Roger Cedeno.

A veteran of eight major-league seasons, Widger was jettisoned after the club decided to retain nonroster catcher Cody McKay. Widger believed the decision had been made much earlier in camp and that McKay enjoyed an advantage as son of first-base coach Dave McKay.

"There was a lot of stuff going on around here," Widger said. "Maybe now I'll move to a situation where the manager wants me around."

Widger returned to the Cardinals last winter for a $500,000 guaranteed contract and thought that his status as backup to Mike Matheny was secure.

That notion was challenged quickly this spring as manager Tony La Russa leaned toward McKay early on. Widger never caught a member of the projected rotation and rarely received at-bats in clusters. McKay, 30, made the team as a nonroster invitee with three career major-league at-bats.

"I had the impression that the manager didn't want me here," Widger said as now-former teammates stopped by with best wishes. "Whether that's right or wrong, that's the impression that I had. ...It was either the first or second week that Tony called me into his office and made it clear that the job was up for grabs. How that happened, I don't know. Nothing changed from last year. They told me how happy they were with how I ran the pitching staff. I don't understand."

After speaking with general manager Walt Jocketty on Friday, Widger thought he would return to St. Louis with the club. Saturday's news jarred him.

"There are a lot of guys in here who I'm very close to and very much enjoyed being around," Widger said. "It's tough to leave them. ... But I'm going somewhere where maybe things will work out."

McKay is a lefthanded hitter who also can play corner infield positions. However, as the sole backup to Matheny, that flexibility may be diminished.

Widger remained in the visitors clubhouse as the Cardinals filed toward the team bus. In an oblique reference to what he considered politics surrounding the situation, Widger said, "Some people in this game have a guardian angel. I'm going to New York. Maybe I'll find my guardian angel there."

The Mets had to eat 9 million of the 10 million that was left on Cedeno's contract for this to go through.

I can't beleive Widger is such a crybaby over being traded. It was obvious to me his offense stunk and his defense was decent at best. And he thinks McKay got the job because his Dad is buddies with the Manager? That could be true but McKay outplayed Widger and McKay is more versatile. And Widger couldn't call a ball game for anything. Trading Widger & Delgado for Cedeno and only paying around 1mil is one of the best moves by Jockety.
