No, the guy can hit for average and power. If Ichiro wasn't a leadoff man, he'd be pumping out more home runs, but with a lesser batting average. I see Matsui in the same way, but depending where the Mets put him in the lineup depends on what kind of hitter he'll be. He could be the slap hitter like Ichiro or he can be the average/power hitter.

I hope you are right. Being a Mets fan, I just feel that everything they touch turns into turd. Every other team takes our scraps and turns them into Gold (Dotel, Isringhausen, etc.).

      AHHHH!!!!! Met fans everywhere!

Make all the jokes you want about the Braves attendance, but when was the last time the Mets out-drew the Braves in a season?

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the game tonight.

Last time was 2002 and we only had 78 home dates that year to Atlanta's 81!!

You guys beat us in attendance last season. The Mets only had 76 home dates because we had 4 doubleheaders and one game flat out cancelled. Congrats.

I actually didn't think you guys had out-drawn us that recently, figured it would've been 2000.

I don't live in Atlanta, so I can't defend the fans there. I always cringe whenever I watch a game and see the stadium half-full. At the same time though, I think the media and other teams' fans unfairly single out the Braves. I remember in 2001, everyone was crying about the Braves not selling-out a playoff game, yet they ignored the fact that Arizona, Houston and Oakland failed to sell-out some playoff games.

Irabu was a pitcher though, it's a little different. Compare Kaz to Ichiro and Hideki. If those two can make the adjustments then Kaz should be able to as well, if he's as good as advertised.

                        <hr /></blockquote><font class="post">

How about Tsuyoshi Shinjo, then? He was a good fielder with some speed, but an absolutely terrible hitter once he came over here.

If it weren't for Ichiro coming here the same year and stealing all the headlines, Shinjo would have gotten a ton of hype, because he did have some good numbers in Japan and was supposed to have some pop in his bat. All he turned out to be, though, was an easy out.
