Re: MLB Off-Topic
Instead of caring about how long games can be, why not promote it as "hey, you never know what you're gonna get and that's what makes baseball awesome because anything can happen and the game can unfold in thousands of different ways."
Even though for some reason people are trying to artificially limit game outcomes and destroy *what* makes the game the best.Comment

Getting rid of commercial breaks would just mean the fan at home is watching the changeover and warmups take place. Won't effect the length of game at all.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.
I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

The commercial breaks occur while the teams switch from fielding to batting and vice versa and then the pitcher takes his warmup tosses.

If I'm at the ballpark and the game is less than three hours, I feel pretty shortchanged (outside hopefully an awesome experience of a good ballgame).Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
The issue is more with "pace of play" as well.
The commercial lengths are fine. I think they've been reduced from past seasons as well?
The issue is how so much of the game you see multiple pick offs, mound visits, pitcher stepping off the rubber, batter calling time and stepping out of the box.
I know they made a change recently, but I'd reduce mound visits to 1 per pitcher per game. Regardless if the catcher wants to go to the mound or the pitching coach does, you can only do it once per pitcher.
The pitch clock would reduce amount of time a pitcher throws AND amount of time a batter has to step out of the box. Once that clock begins, it's fair game, if the batter isnt in the box and the pitcher is ready, they can throw. If the batter is ready and the pitcher isnt, the clock begins anyways and that's on the pitcher.Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
The heck are you some talking about, with no commercials there is no baseball on TV. What, is MLB moving toward a pay-per-view model?

Re: MLB Off-Topic
Ok, Manfred, you give me, written in a contract till the end of time: regular 9 inning games (including doubleheaders), regular extra innings (no runner at 2nd), we take out the 3 minimum batter for relievers, electronic strikezone,
in exchange I give you:

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I'm interested in how the 20 second pitch clock is implemented in the minors. The penalty for the batter not being ready is that the pitcher gets to throw anyway and what happens happens? And if the pitchers isn't ready (with no one on base) does the pitcher gets assessed a ball?
I want to see it implemented in the minors (or a particular minor league?) and evidence of how it reduces gametime and improves pace of play. With evidence at hand we can make inform decisions.OSHA Inspector for the NBA.Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
If they reduced the time between innings from 2 minutes to 1, that would help. MLB isn't going to give up that ad revenue though.
The other time killers are all the strikeouts (takes 4 to 6 pitches usually and cuts down on ball in play outs happening earlier in the count), and the time between pitches.
Time between pitches could be fixed. Getting less strikeouts is more involved. You'd pretty much have to treat the fact that pitchers have become so good the same way successful monopolistic companies are treated in antitrust law. I.e., congrats, you won the game, now we have to break you up. If they could somehow make the ball come out of the hand slower and also change the bats so balls don't travel for as many homers, that might get us back to more line drive swings, less strikeouts, but similar amounts of hits and runs.
If you look at sports broadly, the play styles all evolve as the most efficient and effective ways to win are discovered over the decades. Problem is, the modern versions aren't always the most entertaining to watch for a lot of people. Baseball and basketball are examples. I think football is the opposite, most people seem to like the modern passing game (I myself don't, I want to see lots of running, which keeps the clock moving).Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
Yep, analytics basically solved baseball (at least for the current rules) and Manfred is mad about it. See how no one is suggesting doing anything about front offices (not that there's anything to be done or could be done), because you would be laughed out of the building.OSHA Inspector for the NBA.Comment

That seems fair to me.Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
One thing I would love to see , is a team that does the complete opposite of what the analytics say. If the analytics say the best way to play is get on base by any means necessary and try to pull the ball for a HR, there should be plenty of fast, opposite field slap hitters that aren’t really valued anymore. I’d rather have the best speed and contact offense than the 20th ranked offense that does what the analytics say is best.Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
May as well keep making ridiculous changes and make any foul ball on a 2-strike count result in a K.
Make a walk only take 3 balls so it has equality with strikes.
Take a page from Finnish baseball and force all runners to advance a base if a ball is caught in the air.
In following Finnish baseball, take away the physical bags at each base and just draw a circle 5 feet in diameter. The player at each base just has to catch the ball or run into the circle with the ball to get a force out. That'll reduce errors and help get more outs.
Implement a 5 run limit for each half inning so that even the offensive shootout games are cut down in time.
If the old farts hate these changes so what? We only want new baseball fans watching the sport die.

Do the commercials really bother you people that much?
Would you rather have grotesque endorsements all over jerseys and fields and helmets and such?
No thank you.Comment
