He's not struggling though. He's been one of the AL's better pitchers. Just got smoked yesterday. It happens. Rays are pretty damn legit. I'm starting to see this.

I always thought it was sort of "common knowledge" that Cole used stuff. Personally I don't care. I say let the pitchers use some stuff. If they have better control then that's a plus. Hardly anyone has great control these days, so if we can help that out, let's do it.

Eh, I'm not a fan of that excuse. I'd rather instead say work on their control. Too many pitchers are throwers these days and not actually pitchers... ish.

I don't understand the "better control" argument either. I know Pillar got nailed in the face, but this isn't exactly an everyday occurrence here. Pitchers just need to know how to throw with the ball that they have.

Granted, it shouldn't be juiced either, but yeah.

I don't think it's about better control, it's about increased velocity and movement. If you want better control you need to not throw as hard and pare down your pitch arsenal.

But if you're able to gain velocity using a substance, can't you then maintain velocity while throwing not as hard thus increasing your control? Sounds like if you use the stuff you can continue throwing 98 and have better control of it.

Is this problem specific to MLB? Or do other pro baseball leagues (NPB, KBO, etc.) suffer from this type of controversy as well?

Regardless, the past 3-5 years of MLB have driven me to become more of a college baseball fan than ever before. Hell, I even started going to high school games with my son recently.

I want to go back to the days 95+ was a rarity. Pitching meant control, not velocity.

I remember a quote that Maddux said things changed for him when he realized it's more effective to pitch to contact versus swings and misses. Location and pitch mix/velocity are just as effective if not more than 100mph heaters.

...plus it's better on the arm.

Don't mean to hijack the discussion, but curious-- does anyone have a keeper league or active fantasy league and is looking for owners? I took a break from fantasy baseball for a few years then decided to join a public yahoo league...and it's just too ridiculous.. inactive and cpu- like moves such as one of the owners dropping Starling Marte out of nowhere.

Some positive news for the Jays.

The NHL has gotten permission to have cross border travel for the next round of the playoffs which will be happening later this month.

On the same day, the Jays announced that Buffalo will have 80% capacity for their games until July 21st.

After that they go on a road trip for just over a week, so July 30th could be next possible date they'd have a shot of returning to Toronto.

I wouldn't be surprised if they do get back to Toronto for August. Maybe even limited capacity where only those with both vaccines can attend (feels like many will have both by July).

I would love to get to a game this year. And I’m getting my second shot soon.[emoji106]

Latest report now says a proposal has been submitted basically by all the major teams in Ontario (Jays, Leafs, Raptors, TFC, CFL teams and others) to have up to 35% capacity in stage 2 (which should be happening in early July) and up to 100% capacity in stage 3 (which should be happening in late July).

I doubt we'll be in Stage 2 once the Jays return here, so it will be interesting to see if they can get back to Toronto maybe sooner than expected, and with fans too.

They just announced more Buffalo games, but then if this stuff gets approved, I see no reason why they wouldn't be able to get games going here as soon as the ASB is over.

Pete Alonso didn’t hold back when asked about the foreign substances. He said let the pitchers use it and then went on to accuse MLB of manipulating the baseballs depending on the upcoming free agent class. When it’s a pitcher heavy class they’ll juice the ball and when it’s a hitter heavy class like this year they’ll deaden it.

I haven't seen the comments, but that would be Alonso accusing the Commissioner of colluding with owners to depress whole classes of free agents.

Don't know if he said that out of his own volition or if the Union put him up to it but that's pretty serious stuff.
