So much for the ASG being "must see TV". I'd like to see the HRD numbers also. I only watched Ohtani and then turned it off when he was eliminated.

I gotcha. Turns out at least a couple people tuned in.

In even better news, Monday’s Home Run Derby on ESPN and ESPN2 was the most-watched since 2017, according to Nielsen. The event, won for the second year in a row by New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso, generated an average audience of 7,126,000 viewers, including 6,358,000 viewers on ESPN and 767,000 viewers on ESPN2 for the Statcast-focused alternate presentation.
The telecast peaked with 8,685,000 viewers from 9:30-9:45 p.m. ET during the swing-off between Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto.

Seems plenty of people were like myself and only tuned in for Godzilla. Too bad his pitcher didn't do him many favors and he was eliminated early on.

Athletics and Oakland still really far apart on some things. Big vote on Tuesday while the A's will be back in Vegas on Wednesday.

          Negotiations continue.

Oakland used to and I'm sure still does have the best looking grass in MLB. If they move to Vegas and this doesn't continue, it will be a sad day.

Friday night, start of a 10 game homestand, right at the deadline. It could be 2015 like crowds again.

They're pretty much all on there, but MLB has the full 1998 Home Run Derby on YouTube. A-Rod, Chipper, Junior, Big Mac, Jim Thome. The last time the ASG was at Coors Field. The players being introduced by Michael Buffer, Chris Berman announcing, Jock Jams "Are You Ready For This?" playing.

The only bad thing was the old Derby Rules. Players only have 10 outs. The first guy up, Damion Easley, only got 2 home runs. Could you imagine that today?

I'll rewatch his rounds again, but I don't know what the pitcher was doing that was hurting him. I mean maybe he was, maybe he was throwing low and outside the entire time, I have no idea.

What I do know is that Shohei was top-spinning everything early on, which means he was trying to force lift when he didn't need to. Yes, I know his swing is naturally like that as well, but in Colorado backspin is everything for a home run recipe, and Shohei wasn't helping himself there.

By the way, Manfred absolutely got the HRD right. I don't know if I prefer "throw as many pitches as possible" versus "wait for your last ball to land," but the time limit versus ten outs is exactly what was needed.

It definitely limited the possibilities with for some guys. McGwire at the '98 HR Derby is an example of that. But at the same time it made it more impressive when Sosa went off at Turner Field. Personally I think guys hitting 25-40 HR in a single round is kind of ridiculous.

It absolutely is ridiculous. Which is what makes it so fun to watch. Like Vlad Junior hitting 91 total home runs in 2019. That's absurd and fun.
