The Nationals have nobody but themselves to blame for pissing off Juan Soto. How can you give Strasberg all that money knowing his injury history and then turn around and offer less annually to him?

Too many casual fans and generally unaware people saying “oh he’s so ungrateful for $440 million”. I’d leave too if I was slighted in that manner

Tough spot for the Nats. There's no way they'll get enough in return

It was for 15 years, would’ve been the 16th highest paid player, less than Chris Sale.

Yeah, it's always a little barren to look at the total amount (which is a great amount, make no mistake here) and ignore the number of years compared to the market demand for the quality of player, youth, etc.

15 years is a nice lock though, but that's the rest of his career. If he thinks he can get more, good on him.

It would have been the biggest total contract in baseball history, being roughly 20 million more than what Trout signed.

Trout's contract is also twelve years. Again, that is being completely negated.

We can argue how much Soto or baseball players are worth some certain number of millions all they want, but the take-home thing for me is that if Soto was offered a $100 million contract, I'd like to hear the other important number in that term. Is that for ten years, or hell is it for one year? All of that makes a world of difference to the player as well, especially if they feel over that same number of years they can make more with a different deal.

I still look back and wonder what the Nats thinking looked like when they offered Strasburg a 7yr/$245M deal on the back of one very good season. Prior to the 2019 campaign, he only pitched in 30+ games on two occasions (2013 and 2014). Since signing the deal, he's pitched in 7 games (31.1 innings). The numbers of garbage during that time, so I'll spare y'all that.

Thinking more (20/20 hindsight), the Nats would've been better served re-signing Rendon and locking up Turner to a long term extension.

Is the thought around the league that Soto wants to be part of a winning team and not fall into another potential Trout situation?

I think if they threw 15 years, somewhere close to 40 per it’d be over. But this is also the Nationals, so it’s possible if not likely there’s a bunch of deferrals so he’d be getting paid til he’s 60.

The Red Sox may be a team that will make a push for Soto. As of today, Boston only has $80 million on the books for next season with 10 players headed to arbitration. Of those 10, only Devers and Verdugo will see substantial increases. Payroll flexibility shouldn't be a problem going forward. Also, they don't get a lot of power from the left hand side (beyond Devers). Adding Soto would help that down the stretch.

Boston also has enough young players to potentially make the Nationals bite. Baseball America had them with the #11 farm system at the beginning of the year. There are guys like Triston Casas (1B), Blaze Jordan (1B/3B), Bryan Mata (SP), and more. They even have some big league ready prospects in Franchy Cordero (OF), Brayan Bello (SP), Jarren Duran (OF), and a few others.
