Re: MLB Off-Topic
Out of curiosity and as a Braves fan from the era; Does Paul O'Neill really deserve to have his jersey retired in Yankee Fans eyes? I'm not saying he wasn't a really good player, borderline all star every year and a core of that dynasty, but still. Dude was a really good player and I'm fine with the plaque he already had in monument park, but retiring his number for a non-hall of famer in that organization seems??? I don't think he's as good over his whole career as the other non-HOF guys who's numbers are retired from those teams (Bernie/Posada).
His counting stats as we measured them back then are all above average to good, but nothing ever screamed, "this dude's number will be on the wall" to me.Golf: Bubba

Re: MLB Off-Topic
yeah, the Yankees probably need to slow down after O'neill's number is retired, unless they're gonna start handing out triple digit #'s. there are other Yankees who should have their number retired too, if O'neill's number is getting retired imo
I'm no Yankee fan but at the same time I could understand his number being retired except for the fact that depletes the available numbers left to use.
dunno why but this is the second time this week this topic has entered my stream of conscience. I'm no Laker fan either by any stretch but I was surprised Pau Gasol number was retired a few days ago. got into a pretty heated debate with a fella at work, where I didn't think the Lakers should have retired Pau's number either.OSFM23 - Building Better Baseball - OSFM23

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I’m not a Yankees fan but I believe ( with absolutely no info to prove otherwise) Paul O’Neil was probably more important to the Yankee clubhouse than his stats will ever show and that is why his number was retired.
The honour was to satisfy the team, not really the fan base.

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I'm indifferent on it. As a Yankee fan I loved Paul O'Neill. He was the glue guy. He was more then that. He was one of those guys that embraced being a Yankee. And we all loved him for it, he had so much fire. He was a perfect addition to those teams.
You have to factor in he's been an announcer for the Yankees for a long time. That definitely factors into the equation too.

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I do think those who lived through those years and didn't look back at the stats wouldn't question this decision too much, but I'm sure if you scrutinized enough you'd be wondering who else might be knocking on the door of retiring theirs as a Yankee as well.
What's funny though is that even though sometimes it feels like "they're running out of good numbers," the fact of the matter is that nobody besides LaTroy Hawkins has worn #21 for the Yankees since his retirement anyway, and he was only there for half of a season. It's almost like they implicitly honor the player without the official ceremony for a while anyway. So it's not really like we're robbing players of that number much more than we had been in the past twenty years as is.
I guess the only question comes down to whether he is deserved and whether other players would now be considered.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
Unrelated.
I was watching 1999 playoff highlights and the 1999 NLCS was incredible with games 5 and 6 going extra.
ALCS saw Boston get robbed in key calls and just fail in the clutch.
WS was pretty meh but the LCS were good.Originally posted by Gibson88Anyone who asked for an ETA is not being Master of their Domain.

Re: MLB Off-Topic
that '96 series still bugs me as much as the '91 & '92 series
the '99 series didn't bother me nearly as much, anticlimactic end to a great Braves decade that still had so much unrealised potential to offer even more.
still, there were 20+ other teams that would have killed to have the success the 90's Braves hadOSFM23 - Building Better Baseball - OSFM23

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I would have killed for the Yankees to win in 2001. After 9/11. It had to happen. It was the storybook ending. I know Jeets and company would have traded any WS to win that year too.
That one hurts the most. It's hard to complain of course. But that was a gut shot.

Re: MLB Off-Topic
in hindsight, I would have like to have seen a Boston-Braves WS in '99, but at the time I sure wanted Atlanta to get some payback on the Yankees after blowing that 2-0 game lead in the '96 series.

Kevin Harrish - Yesterday 10:11 AM
It has not been a particularly strong season for Major League Baseball umpires as umps across the league have gone viral for blown calls and other gaffes all season. On Sunday, another MLB umpire made a terrible call behind the plate, and it led to an extremely heated argument and an ejection.
In the top of the third inning of Sunday’s game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the St. Louis Cardinals, Diamondbacks pitcher Merrill Kelly threw a pitch to Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado that looked quite a bit inside.
Even though the pitch looked several inches off the plate, home plate MLB umpire Oliver Marmol called the pitch a strike, and Cardinals manager C.B. Bucknor went absolutely ballistic.
Marmol immediately ejected Bucknor as soon as the St. Louis manager stepped out of the dugout to argue the call, but that didn’t stop Bucknor from having a heated exchange with the umpire for several minutes before he left the game.
After the game, Bucknor called the pitch “a clear ball,” and offered a reason why he was so angry, according to Bally Sports.
“I didn’t like the smirk when I got out there,” Bucknor said. “And then he questioned my time in the league, so I returned the favor and questioned his time in the league.”
The Cardinals ultimately won the game 6-4.Last edited by countryboy; 08-23-2022, 08:49 AM.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.
