I thought it meant he's retiring at the end of the year!

His final ever game was the most un Angel Hernandez like game ever...almost like he's called bad games on purpose.

So long as it wasn't health-related (in which case I hope all is well), then good riddance.

Hopefully this helps alleviate the push for automated strike zones.

Negro league stats will officially be added to MLB data base tomorrow.

How would people classify record holders? Seems we'll see various major league records being "broken", but at the same time the negro leagues didn't have 150+ game schedules.

But then again, there's so many records that are set in like 1899 or 1930 or something anyways.

To me it feels weird having it integrated into MLB stats.

MLB recognizing the negro leagues as a pro league just means they're accepting the leagues as part of their integrated MLB history?

We don't see the NBA include ABA stats as part of their history do we, even though the ABA was absorbed by the NBA.

Not that there's anything wrong with what they're doing, just wonder like you said, why now specifically (though better now than later or never obviously), or why not just do what we see sites like sports reference do where they have NHL/WHA and NBA/ABA separate categories for stats.

The ABA wasn't created as a product of white players refusing to play against black players.

                  Re: MLB Off-Topic

The NBA/ABA, NHL/WHA, NFL/AFL situations had nothing to do with segregation. They were simply competing leagues.

The Negro Leagues existed specifically because of segregation and the great players who played in that league were robbed of the opportunity to play Major League Baseball.

To me, that is the difference, and I have no problem with their statistics being integrated. It's sad that it took until 2024 for it to happen, but I'm glad that it is, and I'm ok with the decision to do so.

                  Why now? Why not?

I'm not saying negro leagues existed for same reason, I'm just saying more I'm wondering why they were recognized as a pro league but being considered part of MLB record books, does it mean they're technically part of MLB history, almost considered like a "third league" alongside the AL and NL.

Could've just done the pro league recognition and stat integration announcement together.

Timing wise, does it have anything to do with the negro leagues taking off in the 1920s? So this is around the 100th anniversary of

Until relatively recently, the National and American leagues were separate entities. A few years ago, the Negro leagues were recognized as a major league. From that viewpoint, it makes sense for the Negro league records to be recognized by MLB.

To expand on that, there were several non-AL/NL leagues from the late 19th/early 20th century (Federal League, etc.) that were officially recognized as "Major League" back in 1969, and their stats have been considered "official" ever since.

Major League Baseball’s embrace of the Negro Leagues is now recognized in the record book, resulting in new-look leaderboards fronted in several prominent places by Hall of Famer Josh Gibson and an overdue appreciation of many other Black stars. Padres Tucupita Marcano facing lifetime ban for betting on games last year when with the Pirates. He allegedly bet on games when he was injured.

4 minor leaguers also under investigation for betting on MLB games.

David Fletcher also being investigated for betting using the same bookie as Ohtanis interpreter.

Something really needs to be done about all of this because we're just gonna keep hearing more and more stories about this.

Haven't followed NFL news on this matter, but we've had an NHL player suspended (with the league seemingly trying to cover it up), an NBA player banned, now possibly multiple MLB players banned. All in less than a 9 month timespan.

Just wait until it's some all star player in a sport, then the league will do something, because if you're just suspending/banning borderline main roster guys, that won't be cared as much.
